if you really think that then fair enough  OH NO my life is over i've "made a tit out of myself" for claiming that sunderland has an empty stadium where newcastle get 50000+ EVERY week. Oh but that doesnt matter because it wasnt the case in 1976.

You think I acually care?

I was 6 years old, what do you expect  So because I dont know the facts and figures from 15 years ago I cant have a say? please!

I do not in any way profess to be some sort of football guru. I just enjoy taking the piss out of Sunderland. Just banter at the end of the day.

And with all due respect how do you know what I know about football??? FInd it strange how certain board members think they know everything about everyone based on nothing

And yous DO blatently bite, every post I make either you or Dan are straight in there all guns blazing!!

But the thing is, im not talking shite. Newcastle do have 50k+ a week supporters. Sunderland do not.

Perhaps I dont know the history, but at present, it IS the case

And yeh i supose my interest in football is relatively recent compared to alot of other people on here, and once again I will point out that i do not profess to know a massive amount

Hence why I hardly post about it......

But it is funny arguing with unsubstantiated information and watching the reactions

i couldnt give a shit about a bit of banter, but comparing the support of sunderland to that of newcastle is ridiculous... for a start newcastle is bigger and has a larger fan base, and is currently the bigger team of the two so any borderline areas would probably go with newcastle.

also newcastle have been recently successful hence you get more fair weather fans, even geordies admit many fans jumped on the keegan bandwagon. if newcastle have another few seasons of mediocrity, bad football and even relegation then you can knock a few thousand season ticket holders off... very few teams sell out when the team fails to perform season upon season (look at boro ;) altho we did sell out in 97/98 in div 1, but shite football ensued until very recently)

so its daft to assume newcastle would be any different when history proves otherwise. crap football = lower attendances, plus the fact more football is on telly and attendances are dropping over europe. football fans aren't that different, especially when its two cities right next to each other. ;)

i think you're forgetting/ignoring the fact that back then during the 80's/early 90's the region was affected heavily from certain political and economical factors, i.e. pit closures and massive unemployment. could this not go some way to explain drops in attendances for all 3 clubs?

and would you say it is correct to say that the rise in attendance figures for newcastle coincided with the huge regeneration of the city and region resulting in considerable investment in the area, reduaction in unemployement but also with an ever improving football team thanks to keegan?

we (nufc) have been distinctly avergage for the last 10years since keegan has left with the expection of perhaps 2/3 years but still the fans turn up in their numbers. now if you take this information and apply it to the fact that the region isn't going through a recession or isn't suffering from mass unemployment, you can see we piss all over you's in terms of fanbase and commitment.

agree completely, unemployment still plays a big part, i have the attendance figures and its obvious that the socio-economic strife the area was under affected attendances. that coupled with some bad years including liquidation for boro was always going to affect attendances... but my point was that football has never been this commercial and thus its prone to attract hangers on.

if anyone wants attendances then here they are... click

i would say so... although i wasnt in newcastle during most of the regeneration so i dont have much experience of that. its something that should be happening to a greater extent in boro.

i cant comment for sunderland but for boro the reason is obvious. we are a far smaller area and have been playing shit football since robson relegated us. since the villa thrashing it has been the most entertaining football ive seen since rav, emmo and juninho... but the damage is done for many long term fans who publicly left the riverside due to mcclaren. plus we are on telly a lot, a popular reason for some fans to stay home or go to the pub.

middlesbrough is a smaller place, with a catchment area that is more disconnected whereas newcastle is the communications hub of tyneside.

middlesbrough is also a shift work town and with 22% of fans being female (the highest % in the prem) and in retail its not always easy to get to those weekday evening games. also many people in teesside ARE getting laid off due to economy fluctuations... its not the most stable place to work.

Where do most Boro fans come from?

    Middlesbrough - 134,847
    Stockton - 178,405
    Redcar & Cleveland - 139,141

Where do most Newcastle fans come from?

    Newcastle - 259,573
    North Tyneside - 191,663
    Northumberland - 307,186

    Total them up:

    Boro - 454,393
    Geordies - 758422

Add in South Tyneside and Gateshead, where most are probably Newcastle fans too

    = 1,102,358

You have closer to 2.5x as many fans to pool from.

if you compare to the amount of people in manchester, london etc then just under 30,000 boro fans a week is impressive. 35,000 is a lot to fill for a place boro's size.
