    Here is the covering letter.

    A short background summary:
Many past studies have suggested that MDMA is neurotoxic and it is thought that this neurotoxicity is selective to the serotonin system in the brain, which regulates sleep, pain, states of mood, etc. MDMA causes a massive efflux of serotonin, which probably explains the reported extreme mood lifts, feelings of elation and pleasure, and so on. The subsequent acute decline in serotonin, which may reach below the normal level, probably explains the reported feelings of lethargy, unsociability and depression.

The degeneration of serotonin has been associated with the development of several affective disorders, in particular of depression. Thus, the aim of many studies is to propose a link between MDMA-induced decline in serotonin function and the apparent onset of depression following its use. The big question is whether this is a temporary depletion that will recover, or whether it has implications on long-term serotonergic
    neurotoxicity.

Given the scope of this study, I will be looking at possible connections between dose and amount of Ecstasy taken per occasion, frequency and length of use, and indications of increased depressive symptoms compared to non-Ecstasy and non-drug users.

Ecstacy itself does not kill you. Leah Betts and Lorna Spinks did not die from ecstacy. Its what YOU DO on ecstacy that kills you. For example as scarecrow said before, Leah Betts drank 12 pints of water in a short space of time and drowned. That would kill anyone, but females have to be slightly more careful than males due to differences in biological make up.

If you have a heart problem and take ecstacy then that can cause death. Also, overheating and dehydration can be killers, but that is not the actual ecstacy its what YOU DO after taking it, MDMA does not kill in the kind of doses present in ecstacy tablets. As long as people know the risks and go out in groups who look out for each other it shouldn't be a problem.

People also talk about other shit going into ecstacy tablets, this is an unsavoury thought but is generally an urban myth... shit goes in but generally not enough to cause any trouble.

Apperently ecstacy taken in reasonably high doses (ie more than 3) and on a regular basis (2-3 times a month) for a prolonged period of time can cause brain damage in the long run... but come on all the chemical reactions taking place are bound to have some effect on the brain.

Read a book called 'This is... Ecstacy' it gives an unbiased look at the facts not condeming or promoting ecstacy, and lets the reader make up their own mind.

in a way it is the ecstacy that kills, cos it fucks up your homeostatic balance, or rather your brains perception of your homeostatic balance...

kindalike if you got really drunk then decided to walk on a motorway, but on a subconscious level...

more often than not, it is not MDMA which is to blame for an 'ecstasy' death; it is some other subtance sold off as MDMA. The chemicals below are often sold off as ecstasy. Beware!

I see ya point... but in the end, even when im fully fucked im still capable of knowing that I need to sit down or drink a bit of water. Technically its not what you have put into your body that kills you, its what you, yourself, does. I believe that aslong as information is available a people choose to access it then ecstacy is a relatively safe drug to use in the short term. By that I mean the long term effects are not known so we will have to wait for the information to become available. As long as people are aware I think it is a far safer drug than alcohol... just compare the ratios and figures:)

in a similair vein, a story on BBC "proving" that cannabis is not as harmless as we thought

    "Cannabis 'led to shooting'

The shooting death of a man in Lincoln is proof that cannabis is not a harmless drug, a coroner has told an inquest. "

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lincolnshire/3399805.stm

However, read the story carefully you'll see the killer was pissed as a newt at the time, and although he did grow plants in his loft, there was nothing to say he was stoned at the time.

pile of shite, bad advice like this does a LOT of harm

THAT MEANS I'M FUCKED NOW SO WHAT AM I GONNA BE LIKE IN YEARS TO COME?

FUCK IT I MIGHT AS WELL GET TWATTED ON ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME FROM NOW ON THEN.

Agreed, it is pretty obvious that most drugs will have side effects and extreme cases, however scaring people into not taking them has been shown not to work. Presenting the unbiased truth will lead to a far better outcome imo.
