It's not strange, think about it, every game these days uses one engine, take gears of war, it uses the Havoc engine, witch was also used in Halo & Amped ect. The game is limited to what the engine allows it to do, if you have multiple engines you can make games so diverse, the possibilities are immesurable.
You dont know much mate. Havok is the physics engine. The graphics engine for Gears of War is Unreal 3 engine from Epic. Like Quake uses Doom engine etc. Half Life 1 used quake engine, half life 2 used source, which was their own developed.
It would make no sense to have more than one graphics engine. The reason developers share engines and license them out, is to save time and effort in making numerous graphics engines. Blurays extra space can be used for huge textures, but not numerous engines as far as im concerned
You can get a pc for £1000 that is better than a PS3 IMHO. I'm a big fan of Sony's past two consoles but they have dropped the ball on this one big time. Wii FTW (console wise).
Can get one for about £120ish quid and about 200ish for a bluray writer for PC - not really a massive price tag
I have Wii is def the worst of the bunch though - very few decent games. Saying that, new mario looks good
I just have to disagree. Developers will fill that space with pointless HD cutscenes, that does not make a game better. I don't see what on earth space on a disk has to do with game engines? Most programming frameworks are quite small in comparison to the textures and sound that make up the visual appearance of the game. The best PC is more powerful than a PS3. Granted the pc costs more but to say a PS3 or a 360 can do the same stuff as a full tricked out pc is just wrong IMHO.
Fortunately for the wii though, its sales are astronomical and after its show at E3 a lot of developers are making games for it. It has a pretty bright future. nintendo is now the second biggest consumer electronics manufacturer in the world.
i would like to add that when i said 30 gig, i was refering to the maximum size of a HDDVD disc, not a blu-ray disc. i can't be bothered to try and find it, but there is a interview out there with some respected game developer, where he effectively states 'i don't think in the lifetime of the current generation of consoles will we need to use more than 9 gig, and if we do, we'll use two discs, and we certainly won't need to use more than 18 gig' at the end of the day, the thing which always uses the most disc space is audio and video. textures, code etc have always used a mere fraction in comparision, and realistically, they can only put so many tracks in a game! what they gonna do, a grand theft auto with 15,000 tracks? to get the licenses would take a lifetime and would probably cost more to make then they could ever hope to get back in sales! also - regarding mutiple game engines - game engines are difficult to make and very expensive (if you want a decent one) i see NO good reason why games developers would waste money and time making multiple engines! the current trend in gaming is to license existing engines and modify them for your own project, like the unreal 3 engine, which is used for more games then i can be bothered to mention. also, bear in mind, an engine can be adapted for many uses - for example, criterion's renderware engine, arguably the most used engine out there, used for the GTA series along with games such as burnout. ps3 undoubtedly has some real processing grunt, and sooner or later it will do something to impress people. up to now it hasnt, and i don't think blu - ray is the thing to do it.
Don't get me wrong, as far as gaming goes nintendo are spot on, i've just not really got a game for my wii that has been any fun to play 1 player for any amount of time.
On my own experience i cant argue this fact either mate. Multiplayer mario strikers is quality, Tiger woods is fun, wii sports etc. All good multiplayer but lacking single player depth. Also, Pretty good post Spud. Cept the textures bit. Textures are pretty intensive when it comes to using up space. Quite enjoyable debate for a newcastle forum. Subsonic seems a bit biased though. Ya just need to see what games suit you and pick the platform. Slating the competition is just pointless though.
indeed, variety is the spice of life, after all! i really enjoy my 360 but certainly wouldnt write ps3 off just because i own an opposition console. at the moment though, 360 is winning the next gen war, but it seems Wii will be the overall victor, it's selling like hot cakes. Despite this, i would argue Wii is not directly up against 360 / ps3, as it seems to be viewed more as a 'second' console, or indeed a party gaming machine. great fun all the same and i think sales wise it will probably hammer the 'heavyweights'.
