it was the case once decss was released for DVD - part of my final year uni project used the decss code to play and rip DVDs onto the hard disk. Not sure to what extent blu-ray/hd-dvd is vulnerable, but I think it's already been broken:

Dual booting is the way forward :) I'm going ott at the mo by quadruple booting XP, Fedora, Ubuntu and Frugalware.

It can only be broken on a per-disc basis atm, but as long as one disc can be ripped for each title I'll be happy watching the x264 encode :cool2:

Well...being a complete and utter i.t nerd with the job title "senior systems analyst" i get to play with big boys toys all day. dual booting is a great idea but the way forward is to grab yourself a copy of VMWare - it's moved on leaps and bounds in the last 4 or 5 years from the days of vm-workstation - i'm into all this disaster recovery stuff at work and we pay oodles of money for the enterprise version but if you scoop on over to their website you can download a free copy of ESX Server. Install this onto your XP machine or whatever and create yourself any kind of virtual machine right in front of your xp desktop without having to dual boot or partition your disks for different file systems.
I've got it running right here with xp as the local o/s then loads of linux and unix clones - redhat, suse and a few others....
and yes os-x works on a standard machine these days since apple made the leap from power-pc processors across to intel x86 architecture. We got the offical vista cd's drop through the post the other day but to be honest i'll be avoiding it like the plague to begin with until all the bugs are ironed out and fixed.
i tested it here on my machine - i run a dual xeon 3.6ghz machine with 2gb ram, nvidia fx5950 256mb vivo card and it ran quite happily but as microsoft says you need uber performance and shite loads of space to run the whole o/s with the all singing all dancing features.

    NERD HAT ON

and forgot to say that if you have vmware running - you can create a virtual xp machine which can be an indentical copy of your host xp operating system (with help from a few 3rd party freeware tools to create an image) - you can then test software in the virtual environment to make sure it doesn't fuck up your registry or other software already installed...

    NERD HAT OFF

I quite like Vista.. was playing about with it at work and it seems to have came on a bit since I last used it (Longhorn Beta 7475 I think...)

It'll take a while to get used to and to mature.. I'll probably either get it in the summer or in 2008..

I would not even let a virtualised Vista near any of my pc's (principal thing), M$ have went way too far with this one. I couldn't care less if it could dance little jiggs, make cups of tea or suck me off in the morning, nothing fucks my hardware except me.

ps I like partitions and chainloading :)

i've managed to get OSX86 up and running on my Acer Aspire SA80... Had to disable Hyper Threading and Local APIC.

Bit stuck now as I use wireless and can't get it to work... Still quite happy I got it going! :)
