Yeah I've been called a Mackem and a Geordie at various times, of which, I'm neither really. I'm from just outside Durham City which is more or less right in between Newcastle and Sunderland so I'm neither one nor the other!

I'm sure some people on the board would be able to find a name for the folk from Co. Durham....any takers? ;)

to be fair though, Consett does get a lot of undeserved criticism.....if anyone has watched a certain Bobby Thompson video, I think you'll see what I mean! Trouble is, that comment still sticks today. its like any place really, there are good areas and bad areas within. One of my friends actually lives on a fairly new development off Medomsley Road and all of the houses/bungalows were really nice.

The centre of Durham is a seriously affluent area. The students bring in massive amounts of money to Durham but its usually the case that Mummy and Daddy are extremely wealthy and wouldn't want to see their prince/princess go without! House prices, you would be looking at maybe £275,000 for a terraced house in the centre and currently some more are being built backing on to the train station which will fetch in excess of £300,000 a piece. Some of the surrounding villages are very run down areas as traditionally, they were pit villages and the housing as well as the people living in these areas have changed very little within the past 50-60 years or so! Just seems as though developers are building new houses on "new" land, where money would be better spent repairing/rebuilding some of the less "savoury" areas....

    True Blue Geordie

a true blue geordie (as me dad used to say) is any1 born in newcastle within 1 mile of the river tyne (as the crow flies). the furthest hospital from the tyne where u are still a true geordie is the queen mary just off the great north road i believe.
