Sell your car then get a loan or take finance out on the Mk5.

If you can find a mkII Golf GTI in a decent condition, buy that instead. One of the best cars ever made!

    Lies.

    I REPEAT MYSELF AGAIN.

The actual fact of the matter concerns the MK4 2 litre GTI and NOT the mk4 as a whole.

MK4 - R32 and 25th Anniversary edition GTI (180bhp) pisses on any previous golf FACTORAMA.

i have owned a mk4 they are shit. shit. shit. throughout the entire range. anniversary edition or not...

believe what you like though, you would be much better off putting your money into a leon though if you are adamant on buying a golf.

some common problems with the mk4 1.8...

and the Leon based on the same chassis as the Mk4 golf is on average between 500-1000 notes cheaper?

Some fair points there to be fair, although in fairness there are some fairly worst case scenarios in that lot. The only severe one IMO is the timing belt...and thats definatley something i will have to consider, but its not as if its the only car that needs a new timing belt. ALot of those problems relate to the later models, I will be after a 98/99/00 tops

my dad had a the 1.8 gti (normally aspirated) and never had a single bit of bother with it.

cheers for that though I will bear it in mind, although I still disagree that those points tar all mk4s as shit.

Just had a look at some Leons like, they come in around the same sorta budget I have (up to 4.5k) but have pretty high miles.

I love the Cupra R models but the rest look a bit plain to me

i had a 1.8gti and had a torrid time.. swings and roundabouts though.

best of luck, i would seriously look at leon's though. i would never of thought of them before i owned a golf, but you get so much extra kit for your money and it is essentially the same car underneath.
