Westies (dog people)

as far as im know westies are notorious suffers of echzema

my mates dog, the one in my avatar is class. plus it loves going on the trampoline.

bit scrawny though, you want a proper sized dog like my golden retrievers.

Our last dog was a border collie and when she died my mum just had to get another one.

Unfortunatly the one she did get is a total nutcase! She's called Meg and we got her from a farm...i've never seen a dog with so much energy in her life! She gets taken up the local field for at least an hour a day, goes swimming and all sorts, If your going to get a collie you have to be prepared to do this!

My parents ended up getting another collie from the cat and dog home a few weeks ago, simply to try and tire meg out....It does work but can be stressful!

Havent got a picture of the new one but here's meg last summer when she was a wee puppy...wish she'd stayed like this!

Awwww get a westie- they're lovely! Well, having said that my aunty has one called Max and whenever he comes round to yours he terrorises our poor dog!

They're so happy and full of life tho - quality dogs

Do they bark loads? Are they easy to train?

just read this thread. i hav just gettin a westie a couple of weeks ago. it was only 8 weeks old. right lil bastards. won't sit still. easy enuf to train tho.

To be honest they are hard work. Very intelligent so you can train them easy, but u have to constantly keep their minds stimulated or they will look for something else to do.....and thats when your house gets eaten!


Got to remember, these are working dogs...so a lot of excersise is essential. You have to take them out and get them tired, or they will run crazy about your house! Meg and the other wee one get their fare share of running about, but about 7pm at night, its crazy time again, running about will footballs and annoying you with toys.

My mums next door neighbour was in the house the other day and she had owed my mum £25. She left it lying in the kitchen. Anyway, meg was being bad and jumping all over the neighbour, so my mum put her in the kitchen. When my mum let her out she came trotting out with a fiver hanging from her mouth! Yep, you guessed it, the £20 was gone. Completely eaten!

saying that, they are brilliant dogs, totally loyal...just sometimes a bit too smart for their own good. As long as you are prepared to take the time to walk them ect, then you should have a good dog.

we have got a cat and have just got a boxer puppy. To be honest think the cat is a bit scared of dog/feels a bit left out at times. Dont think they are ever going to be best of mates to be honest.

Yeah the cat will probably feel alienated in the longrun as dogs naturally crave more attention. My cat practically lives outdoors now as he cant get any peace in the house as the dog hunts him down wherever he goes

i have a doberman and a cat! its totally weird coz they get on fine. They lie beside each other on the sofa and stuff! they never fight!

Thats what we are scared of....we have 2 cats..the older one has never ever been the same since we bought the younger one! My mum said she would be scared incase he ran away or something if we bought a puppy. Since hes so old now I don't think it would be fair (hes like 14 or something)

My mam had one of them , cost her a fortune but had trouble with its eyes from day one , apparently when people keep breeding them all the time there eyes suffer somehow , wasnt long b4 it was blind and cant quite remember how many years she lasted b4 she eventually died !

had to have our westie put down in august, he was 16 like but he
had a lovely personality, i'd definitely have another one. If your dog grows up with a cat around all the time then they should have no problem with eachother.

My mum had a Westie, she was an absolutely gorgeous dog, lovely nature. However, they are prone to horrendous skin problems.
