The weird halfy-half flemish-french culture doesn't make for very quick advancement apparently. Half the country hates the other half, and vice versa, and those in the middle concentrate on getting into EU governing rather than national due to the mad money you can make there.

interesting. I didn't see any more drunks and vagrants than I would in London. Or newcastle for that matter. Don't know about the IT thing. But 'government control means there is a good cheap public transport system, and a civil society that works, the flemish/french thing notwithstanding.

depends what you see as 'advancement' really. We have been brainwashed into believing that everybody having more stuff is advancement. I think the French and the Belgians have managed to hold onto quality of life a bit more than us with a greater emphasis on sharing in society and good food good beer good wine a slower pace of life and a place for culture in life.
It's all going slowly though as american values of I'm all right jack, fuck you take over.

The 50% income tax here i couldnt deal with

... nor the people who insist on being moved offices when they (shock horror) are 'forced' into having 6 people work in their 20 foot by 25 foot office ..... and some massive investigation involving a 'wellness' commitee who come to make sure we are all happy, on the back of this.

I think a balance of socialism is a good counterbalance to the exploitation that comes with capitalism - but im not so sure that this level of it does the place any good.

I suppose im a capitalist at heart.
