    thats a load of twaddle. My vbulletin board was brought down twice by hackers exploiting the code, my latest phpbb implementation hasn't crashed once since it was installed on lima in december of last year.

    Open source support is always better than that of a single company - look at the linux vs. windows argument for the best example. With linux, when an exploit is found, it's made public and everyone KNOWS about it. Which is more than can be said for microsoft (the blaster worm springs to mind as a good example) - when a hole is found in windows, the consumers are the last people to find out... usually first hand.

    If you've paid for the vbulletin licence, you might as well keep the board. I'm just going from the experience I had with it... which might be completely different to Robs.

    Are you trying to argue that phpbb is a more secure board - you'd be laughed off the internet for such a stupid claim... Do a simple search on security focus and this is obvious.

    Your microsoft arguement bears no relevance as the vbulletin source code is in plain text so anyone can patch bugs - just like with phpbb - the difference being vbulletin are obligated to patch bugs themselves if they want to pick up future business.

    You mention your board was hacked, I'm guessing this was an old "illegal" board as all public exploits are patched which is why your encouraged to use current versions.

    in conclusion your talking utter shit :D

    Yeah it could. I never said scrap them though. But I remember Mark hating it when they used to be loads of threads up about coach trips, etc in Mission Control. This is only going to occur once again!:)

    I think you'll find it is you who is talking utter shit :p

    Our vbulletin board was completely legit when we used it on our clan website at darklordhq.co.uk (long since gone.) Apart from invisions power board, I've never used such a piece of worthless crap. I'm disappointed we even paid for it!

    as for phpbb - I won't argue that it's better security wise, I've had to patch my fair share of bugs over the last year... but the support from the phpbb community is much better, as are the different addons and mods available. There's also the fact that I don't have to pay $30 per year to access the support forums!

    My microsoft argument is relevant - you said in your original post that open source software always has poorer support than software for which you pay. I've yet to find an example where this is the case.

    Come on joe... your losing your grip on reality here! :p

    Explain to me:

    How the open source arguement holds any relevence when anyone who has purchased vbb can see the source code, therefore anyone can make patches. So theres one count of you being a complete and utter fool.

    Your telling rob to upgrade to a messageboard you've had continuous security problems with. Thats like encouraging Ariel Sharon to walk around the westbank without an escort.... utter madness.

    As a technology vbb is vastly sueroir to phpbb so there are less bugs, when a bug is found due to the extensive communties and competent staff they are fixed almost straight away - how is phpbb any different you can clearly see the source code in both forums... the only difference being vbb has a profesional reputation to protect so their own programmers get to work on it straight away. Yet again your talking absolout shite :D

    I wont go into how the two boards handle large amounts of traffic - not your 2 quake friends discussing their latest war hammer minatures.

    To finalize your talking even more shit than before :D
