Postmen and binmen are perhaps a little different as you don't see them face to face usually, and no cash changes hands anyway. A lot of people used to give them something at Christmas though (many years ago), some still do.

I never tip anyone, people get paid to do their job so why should they get any extra. I provide a service but don't get tipped for it even if I've bent over backwards (no rude comments please) and had a really stressful case

Lots of bar/service jobs advertise it as a perk of the job that you're allowed to keep your tips, and pay less cos of it.

There's a million ways to justify not tipping, but at the end of the day, it's just a nice gesture.

They should go out their way to serve everyone at the same pace. If you go to the bar and the staff cannot remember who walked up to get served first, how the fuck can they remember who left and extra quid on a tray. At the end of the day, they get paid to sell over priced drinks to customers that might have even paid to get into the place already.

Being selective is shite. A tip shouldn't be expected, it should be a bonus if you get one. Not madatory otherwise you don't get served as quick next time.

I always leave tip's with waiters (even in bars), taxi drivers and hairdressers - not to someone stood behind a bar who has literally turned around, picked up a bottle and passed it over - and charged me £4 for the privilege....

Working in a bar now its really nice to have tips! It can really depend though very rarely its been ladies with me. Its usually older men who give tips, Ive seen people get 12 quid and 8 pound in tips off one person. Most Ive made is 6 quid in one night which I was very pleased with as it it just over an hours work :) My friend Andrea made about 25 quid in tips on bank holiday monday which is like double her pay  Im not envious at all :angel3:

I take it you've never worked in a bar? I'd like to see you try and remember exactly who is next on a 15 foot bar, which is four-deep in people who are pushing each other out of the way. Giving someone a tip and a nice smile just helps them to remember you.

It's also ridiculous to imply that bar prices are the decision of the bar staff. They don't charge you "£4 for the privilege", the brewery does. Bar staff wages are usually shocking.

    Message From The Bar Staff

Please remember to order one drink at a time as we like to run backwards and forwards, it keeps us fit.

When ordering a round please make sure that you don't know what you want when you arrive at the bar. We like to stand and wait while you nip back & forth or shout across the room to find out, (although we do find that other customers who have been waiting for 1/2 an hour tend to start moaning, but hey, that's not your problem!)

Once you have received two drinks please take them back to your table and stay for a quick chat before coming back to pay. We'll still be waiting, we're not going anywhere and we appreciate the rest.

Always order stout last. We really want you to stand at the bar with all your other drinks while it settles, and are particularly pleased when we forget about it and have to be reminded to top it up.

Never put money in our hands. We like to pick it up off the bar, especially if it's all in change in a puddle of beer.

Never say please or thank you - the shock could bring on a heart attack.

Always wait until we have rung your round into the till before asking for crisps, nuts, snacks etc.

When requiring Ready Salted crisps please ensure that you ask for the full range of flavors available before asking for 'plain' - it helps us learn the stock.

If you have been waiting at the bar for at least two minutes please heckle us and tell us you have been there for 1/2 an hour - it keeps us on our toes as we have no concept of time.

I wasn't implying that. My best mate owns a bar and I know about the in's and out's of charges etc..

I quite happily give tips. But most of the time it's not worth it unless you've got some small pocket change because it's not like they're going that extra mile just for you. It is a job like any other.

In my job I have never received a tip. And I go out my way for people every day to make sure I give them the best, professional service possible.

I'm not saying they don't deserve it. I know they get very busy and work hard. But they get paid a wage for their troubles and tips should be a bonus - not expected from each person they serve.

    :)
