America has more scientists working there than any other country. I think if the media climate was the same as it is now when the first nuclear experiments occurred there would have been just as much hype that the nuclear chain reaction could spiral out of control and destroy everything.

Totally agree with that some of the physicists I've met are amazingly talented. It takes far more skills to try and explain high level physics in layman's terms than it does chemistry and biology. Their imagination is brilliant but there's some things that don't seem scientific to me, things like string theory produce no testable hypotheses (yet), so that's not science imo.

We're going on Thursday. After watching the lunchtime news I'm not sure if I want to! We'll probably get swept away on the way up.

So - HERE'S THE QUESTION OF THE DAY!
The boffins were wrong. a man made black hole is consuming the world, you've got around 10 minutes before your atoms are condensed to the size of pin head - what would you do in your last remaining minutes on earth?

(zero points for 'shag the nearest bird' )

They only started sending the particles around the accelerator today. They don't start smashing them for another four weeks or so.

MOS - it depends where I was. As I'm at work right now, I'd probably try to ring my loved ones etc. If the phone lines were down, I'd pop to a shop and drink the most expensive bottle of wine or champagne they had.

There's plenty of time yet for it to all go wrong, particle collisions won't happen until October and the highest energies achieved for two years.

Plenty of time to prepare for the end.

I'd ring friends and family and then find the tallest building around and base jump from it for the adrenaline rush
