reckon the whole black hole/end of the world is a bit over the top, just trying to get people to pay attention to/get an interest in science

good stuff though some proper cutting edge/high profile science being done in europe, good to see

it cost £2.6 billion like, which could probably have been better spent on genetic research into solving world hunger and the like, but for something this grand/this big maybe it's worth it,
hardly any real groundbreaking mega scale astrophysics stuff gets done due to the costs involved, every now and then humanity needs to do stuff like this to show how far we've come, man on the moon etc I reckon

i still rekon that's a bit steep, 2.6 billion for creating explosions? its fucking expensive science set that is.

there was never a man on the moon like - obvious conspiracy that one. why havent we been back ffs?!

Just watched that full video there, quite interesting although I cant help thinking that poor young presenter who has so clearly devoted his entire life to Science has ever seen the inside of a pair of women's legs.

Billions & Billions of Euro's spent on this project & they dont even know for sure if the questions about Higgs Bosun & 'God Particle' will be answered after the tests, genius's.

too true, but i think that's to do with the actual nature of results, it seems they are pulling at straws for it, however they obviously have done some pretty tight research and experimentation.

ALTHOUGH, the outcome of this experiment is based on pretty much theory alone, because no past experiments have taken place, i think that's why the kid is so excited. If the higg's boson is proved to be real - they'll have something else to do for the next 30+ years. and will also be able to patch up holes in previous equations and theories.

plus he's part of the atlas experiment, which is basically the most important in this series.

what really baffled me, and has done in the past, is the fact that they seem just to shrug off that there was just 'nothing' at the beggining. i cant get my head round it!

because it would probably cost alot more than £2.6 billion and there's probably not alot new to be learned by going back

as for the results the geeks doing the research are insanely clever, i'm sure they'll come up with some mind blowing stuff it's just very hard for them to put it into language that we can understand, just getting my head round any of the stuff they mention gives me a migrane:lol:

they deal with mental theoretical stuff all the time because it costs at least £2.6 billion every time they wanna set up an experiment, they're dealing with the stuff of universe creation here, was never gonna come cheap:lol:

it's good though I think, it's been a while since the human race did something so groundbreaking probably the human genome project was the last great scientific work and that was a good few years ago now, and it has ushered in alot of new real world useful applications in medicine, so maybe this will bring some interesting useful stuff too, probably not though, astrophysics tends to be fairly useless in real world application

The prgramme did have me gripped but it just seemed a big fat hefty experiment for the sake of certain theories MAYBE being answered.

Once we get beyond the "ok we were all made from atoms, but what were we before that" it starts to freak me out a little.

loved the part where they were explaining the possibilities of multiple dimensions... were definitely not alone.

i'm not against it, i just think that the money's went on wastage like the scientist's expenses, i rekon at least 1 million of that money has went on porn subscriptions alone :)

    however:

and people think that CDJ's are expensive

There theorists at the end of the day & have openly admitted that some of the Mathematical equations used to describe Astrophysics dont back themselves up when it comes to simple things like adding Gravity to other equations, so nothing other than the String Theory (from what I could see in this) was anywhere near to being claimed as a fact, there still YET to find the 'God Particle' to back up one of there main theories they so greatly rely on for understanding how it all began so who knows this machine could actually prove they've been off the mark with everything they've ever claimed or researched....

Id personally love to see what happens in the experiment although it would freak me out unearthing some truths that we were ultimately nothing in the beginning, im holding out for possibilities that the big bang occurred on more than one occasion in the Universe & we have another Earth with a NUFC that is top of league every season & a Bigg Market that is packet with hotties.

if they did i'm fucking 99.9% sure that somewhere on that research facility some professor is employed to shout "GREAT SCOTT!" at the precise moment it is discovered

string theory is interesting but its really far fetched, and they even said that to detect a 'string' in an atom they would need a partical detector (that big fuck off machine) the size of the earth to detect it

to be fair the scientists generally get pennies, they're proper geeks they do it cos they're obsessed, not for money,

the equipment itself costs way too much for there to be much left for the scientists, they'll be happy with a nobel prize or their name on a paper, alot of the theory aint new it's just there never has and probably rarely ever will be an opportunity to do something like this again,

science is run like business too much not for knowledge alone which means we rarely do anything too groundbreaking, the only reason the human genome project went through was alot of people got worried that the private sector was gonna get it first and start patenting genes it's all about big business unfortunately

on a related note if more sponsership money was paid to researchers I strongly believe there'd be cures for AIDS/Cancer loads of stuff, the best researchers get snapped up by big pharmaceutical/bio-medical companies and made to work on treatements rather than cures as that's where the money is, their thinking is why cure somebody once when you can sell them treatements for their entire life:(

alas, correct. i was merely lightening the tone tho :)

apparently all of the scientists live on the site, so there is money being spent on that - but thats perfectly understandable, and wont even touch the billions that are being spent. as you say - these guy's regard physics like crack to a Compton whore.

i've heard about the way's that pharm companies steal the leaders in the field before they even start to do anything near a breakthrough, or even selfless - proper offside since its all about making money rather than irradicating huge illnesses.

i'm not really in place to say anything because i've admittadly ticked the JSA box from time to time

    - but hey, this threads gotta be going down as the most intellectual this year like!

The few physicists I know are hard working, underpaid and properly intelligent people. I haven't really heard any serious talk about making black holes, and scientists who think it's a bad idea are probably americans annoyed that europe has built the thing :king:

Physicists don't care how ridiculous their theories sound, all they care about is that they explain their observations and the numbers tally. That's proper science, because then you can't get restricted by your own imagination, and don't make flat earth style mistakes because of our tiny individual perception.
