If they weren't kiling in the name of religion they'd be killing in the name of something else. Be it the christian crusades, Hindu - Muslim conflicts in india, the Northern Ireland conflict, these aren't... At the core of all these wars there tends to be a power struggle... Religion is just a medium in which the ruling class can justify these struggles.

If religion wans't there they'd find another medium to rally support - like the cold war - religion was replaced with economic systems... Religion is an easy scapegoat and a powerfull medium for generating support and justification.
