When I worked at barclays we used to take the 16 digit number as a way of finding them on the system.

You rang them remember, I doubt someone has diverted the phone calls and if it was a person in the call centre they could easily get your bank card number anyway. It's the 3 digit security number you shouldn't be giving out.

ahhhhhhh Lee, You're outbound arn't you? I was inbound for barclays and we always asked for there telephone banking membership number first and if they didn't have that then it would be the card number, if they didn't have a card number then it would be sort code and account number. It will be different if you're ringing them because you could be anyone.

We were told it is better to take there bank card number off them because it's harder for someone trying to access another persons account with that. Anyone can get hold of a persons sort code and account number.

credit cards are different as like you say your long number is your account number

lloyds shouldn't have asked you that though...you're a/c no. & sort code aye but not your long card number.

the only reason they should ask you for that is if you ring up card services to check something on your card :)

I worked for a barclays call centre last year and we had to ask for the card number. Has it changed since then?

Aye, you will of been one of the awkward ones. It doesn't make any difference, once they're onto your details they can see your card number anyway.

The company you work for does it, or atleast they used to do it last year and as a preferred method of identification.
