Everyones talkin' up php these days. I'm not really after a job so it's not for my CV so I think i'll try to learn php for now.

Isn't php now the most popular server-side in the world??

Sure I read that the other day.

with php being the free option it probably is, every kid this side of toronto codes in it...

However as it relies on *nix platforms in an age where windows dominate the world its not really that desirable to most employers (sure a few sites huge php but most real sites use coldfusion/asp as they're far more powerful and realiable languages).

The only reason php is so popular cos all the cheap lil linux servers which are bundled with every cheap hosting package use php...

Be a real man learn a real language.

Coldfusion is my weapon of choice - pisses all over ASP :D

wouldn't bother with asp. learn php isn't it based on c++ so it should make that easier to learn as well.

btw html isn't a programming language.

The net used to run of unix/cgi, linux/php was a much smaller step for a lot of sites to take. With linux/php/mysql also being the cheapest option most small businesses and home users use this package... unfortunatly these aren't the people who will pay your bills.

The big sites and big companies pay the big bucks (can you think of any real site that uses php), mickey mouse business pay for one off jobs and although this is decent pay - there isn't enough business and 2 much competition to make any real money.

In order of pay it goes

    JSP/Coldfsuion/Java coders
    ASP/VB coders
    PHP coders

Coldfusion coders get such handsome pay packages (usually around the 30k mark) cos there arent' many cfml coders about, with the macromedia take over I'm sure a year down the line there will be a lot more of them...

If your looking for employment (which rob isn't) then php is the worst language to learn, its the fastest growing language but isn't desirable to employers (theres no support for developers as its open source) - it's also not the easiest of the 4 to learn (asp, jsp, cfml, php) and although it can be used as a stepping stone to c++ this is a useless exercise as c++ isn't used for web applications :D

Be smart and learn CF or ASP.net - either of the later are far mroe powerfull, far more useful and far better paid :D

PHP is a kids language - 13 year olds can't afford real languages :D
