Events during the week used to attract large numbers, but now they're probably a big no no (especially out of term time when all the stoodents go home).

Adding to some of the advice on this thread, putting a trance night on the same night as another trance event might not be such a bad idea depending on how you do it.

You could always bill the night as a "warm up" for a larger trance event like gatecrasher, and publicise that there is free entry and maybe some cheap drink and some decent music.

If you're going to go down that road, try speaking to some of the other promoters round town and see if they're interested in such an arrangement - it may work to your advantage.

The only downside with that setup is that people are unlikely to stay there all night and by 12-1, your venue may resemble a ghost town.

Regardless of what you do, be prepared to put in lots of graft planning and organising the event - the easy bit is turning up on the night with a folder full of tunes.

I've just read that your night is going to be thru the week sorry mate, the Baron & Baroness maybe no good simply because they don't lower there drinks prices on weeknights - not many people are going to pay £3+ per drink when they can go to 80% of the other bars in town that do mid-week deals.

if its a mid-week venue your after it will deffo have to be somewhere with reductions and offers on

cheers 4 all this advice peeps appriciate it!

think alot more research has to be done first like bt my pal has done a few techno nights in stereo few yrs back so could try and relaunch sumfin there!
not looking to lauch a new massive night to compete with the likes of gods, detox and evolve but jus for sumwhere for people to go maybe during the week that plays good music instead of evryone stuck in some of the horrible cheesey bars in toon lol

Get it done man, get a small bar or back room somewhere if you can, a place where you wont have a mountain climb in trying filling it, get all your mates round for a piss up & take things from there. Try to put as little money into it a possible to begin with & hope your mates turn up, then mates of mates... etc.. that way all the fun wont be squeezed out of it by having the pressure of doing well to cover any overheads.
All you have to do is take a look at nights like Jaunt to see that you dont have to break the bank or put ridiculous line-up's on to pack out a club & throw a decent knee's up, just a bit of hard work & like minded mates clubbing together to make something happen.

I never really go out properly anymore.. bring on more outdoor events i say. The farm parties have always been great and it's great to be out with people who aren't there to look great in their new clothes and fancy hair do.

Well said, just look at Beat Therapy.

Even though they started off as a charity event giving as oppose to the usual taking, they’re still going strong with good local support and giving jocks around the region opportunities to play out where they wouldn't have had before.

Plus with the Baron going strong there's only one way for those guys, best of luck!

aye that will work a treat (see above)

BEST ADVICE - be a competent mixer , get on friendly terms with local promoters by ACTUALLY GOING AND SUPPORTING THEIR NIGHT REGULARLY , then when you get a chance to play make sure you take shit loads of your mates along - this will work trust me

...cos everybody knows its not your actual talent that gets you booked for gigs, its how many mates you have to make the promoters look like they've actually done something when you turn up

There was an interesting thread on the Hardwick forum about this just the other week.

([ame="http://www.matthardwick.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27310"]Promoters making DJs sell tickets, thoughts............. - Matt Hardwick Forum[/ame])

As I stated in it, it's unfortunately become industry etiquette now & long gone are the days of simply being a good DJ & being picked up for all the right reasons, however I've witnessed some of the bigger club brands give some up & coming DJ's a chance on the basis they've brought a HUGE entourage of people, they've turned up & played to never be invited back again they were that bad, so there are some that still keep to their morals.

Gary, i read up to page 5 then got sick of reading. really put me in a bad mood to be honest

i've seen a few of the lads on here selling tickets, i assumed this was to make up some kind of salary for playing - if what i'm reading is right, its to guarantee a better set time or a return booking?

I cant really speak for any of the other lads on here but I've not personally fell victim to this, I'll only do tickets for Goodgreef as they've always & continue to be good to me, they've given me a platform & put me on line-up's id have never of dreamed, so I'll always have a kind of loyalty to them in that sense, however my bookings or set times etc... aren't based upon ticket sales with them as some months I simply cant shift any with friends having other plans, working or wanting to go to different nights etc.. etc... ?

I know it goes on & if I was honest I've probably knocked back more gigs than I've actually played over the years due to promoters sending through a booking enquiry & making it imperative early on that I was being booked on the basis I would bring mates. Dont get me wrong I dont mind doing my bit if a gig or events local & helping out with any kind of promo, flyering etc... as I'll always want Trance nights up here to do well (and no fucker wants to play their home town to an empty club Lol).

But I guess I've been lucky & also have a good set of mates that have supported me throughout, most of whom are into the music I play & follow the DJ's I play alongside, so all in all it works out being a good night for everyone, but id rather go back playing to my 4 walls & Debbie McGee posters than travel the arse end of the Country on the basis id sold a dozen tickets or brought a Train full of mates.

that is a clear sign that promoters have used all the original ideas up (that they took from the late 80s) and are too bone idle to come up with new ones to get people through the doors. there are very few actual promoters now, just a load of bedroom djs wanting to play at any cost, even if that means claiming they know how to promote a gig.

the 'superstar dj' scene in the late 90's has literally fucked the dj business. the market is flooded with burks with no idea what they're doing and willing to do anything for no cost - just to get a little taste of the pie (of which because they've played for free, have got none of it).

its no longer a case of playing a great party, its all about where you've played. the status of it. i remember one week on the ship some lad asking me to have a go of the decks and his line to convince me was that he had played stereo. so what? i said, its been dead since shindig moved to digital. playing an empty room in a decent venue doesnt mean you're a good dj. sorry if thats come as a shock to any of you.

the last 'organised' shambles i played at locally there was a big box of flyers behind the bar and the "promoter" was standing looking lost in the empty room (waiting for his go of the decks) - i even had to prompt him to go out on the street and talk to some people! you're kidding me right? thats promoting? 10 people in the room looking bored? fuck that.

its the same with agents nowadays, they want you to do all the legwork finding gigs and they want to take a cut to say you're on their books. fucking pathetic. its a disgusting mess and the kids that dont have the balls to man up and charge for gigs are being played as much as they want to play
