The vestax I used to have had a P&G crossfader and it felt great. I have a feeling the normal faders were ALPS but they worked just as well and didn't give me any bother. I've got the PMC 55 now and I'm not sure about the faders in those... They feel alright but I've not had the panel off to check which ones they are.

I suspect a large part of how mixers do over time is the design around the faders - my old numark one seemed to let dirt in at the top of the fader panel as the faders used to cut out when you pushed them up to the limit of their travel - I've never had that with any other mixer.

cheers for the tip about the gear though, I may try turning it off and see if I get anywhere

the older ones i could agree on, but not now.

my last vestax mixer (and it will be my last) had 3 new line faders and 1 new crossfader in less than a year, and thats including me servicing them with Caig

i also had a 500 that had 2 xfaders in over 3 years and a 600 that had a new line fader in about a week (my bad, i caught it wrong during the tiger paws trick)

utter rubbish for the price you pay for this kind of gear, they tend to build kit with bells and whistles and forget to add the quality where its most needed...

but if they were indestructible, we wouldn't need to buy another one though

loads of problems with pro-audio gear now being made in china

Lots of power amps made out there when tested have been found to be putting out not the amount of ks they say in the manuals,

Cheap workmanship on alot of amps which is not good.

Good discussion on pioneer 500/600's on speakerplans here

    www.speakerplans.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11450&KW=pioneer+mixers&PN=1

I hate the 500/600's as they have no orange and just redline really easly if the attenuator at the back is set wrong they can reallly damage soundsystems.

The no orange and the fact so many djs own them just encourages dj's to ignore redlights which is always from a sound guys point of view a nightmare.

Last mixer was a Vestax PMC05Pro MkIII

A friend of mine has the 07, had it for much longer than I had the 05 and its still running like a champion, you could tell the difference a mile off between the two mixers and they both come with the same faders

His was about 5 years older than mine when I got it

Mark told me about this, I thought it was funny as hell

to be fair our sound setup upstairs isn't that bad, the levels are alright once we revert the changes the "sound guy" made. The speakers could do with some repositioning though. We have a bass bin on one of the roof rafters (god knows why!).

Are you going to be gracing us with your presence over chrimbo? :)

    see you there!

I just hope our gear stands up to the punishment over christmas and we don't have any fuckups...

and in an update to this, apparently the sound guy is blaming the failure of the formula sound mixer on "your djs plugging too much stuff into it"

how does an extra vinyl and cd deck class as 'too much stuff'?

you need to make them aware of the noise levels in place during opening hours, and offer them hearing protection if they want it. Its part of the basic health & safety trainin most employers offer to their staff (knowing where the exits are, what to do in the case of fire, etc).

bad dj setups in clubs = bad crack

as for bars I reckon some of the blame lies in the djs who play on them, treating the equipment with no respect, bars get allsorts of djs on some of whom have never played outside their bedrooms, then crank all the gear right up, fuck the speakers/monitors, thrash the mixer (ripping knobs off etc) and then scratch away on the decks and wreck the styluses, can totally understand why alot of bars ask you to bring your own styluses.

I don't understand how bar setups get so fucked so quickly i've had the same decks and mixer for about 6 years and no buttons have fallen off, the decks aren't wrecked, i've changed the styluses about once every 2 years and I play on them every day?

yes, i think you're right about all that.

however, some of the blame has to be passed back to whoever is in charge of keeping the gear in workable condition.

if somethings broken, fix it straight away, then its back to its original state.

if something fucked, people have less respect for it cos 'its fucked anyway' or 'you have to give the bit that's broken loads more grief to coax it in to working for you'

if it was fixed right away, then the problems wouldn't escalate to 'economically beyond repair'

yeah the bars should take responsibility for keeping stuff in working order it's just the number of times I've played somewhere and the mixer has been visibly fucked and I've wondered

    a) (like you say) why haven't the bar sorted this

    but also

    b) Who did this? I've never broken a single mixer/deck/monitor at any bar i've played at and i'm not massively overcautious and as far as I know neither have any of my mates. (actually I bet Si Quick has, I just ahven't heard about it)

Just reckon you can understand bars not paying a bomb on dj set-ups because

    a) it's rarely their top priority

    b) half the people who play in bars are ten a penny and if they complain can be replaced by the next kid who wants to be a dj

    c) if their kit keeps getting fucked, why spend alot if it's gonna get knacked anyway, would anyone on here let a random so called dj play on their fancy £1000+ home set-ups?

I reckon some bars irrespective of whether the mixer cost £200 or £2000 it would still be fucked in some way inside 6 months.

also pioneer dj500 mixers (which aren't cheap) should be banned from being put in any bar, of all the mixers i've encountered when playing out i'm yet to find one of these with all its knobs/fader/switches still present

completely agree with that, I know of a local DJ who at my last place maxed everything out, destroying every cone in every speaker. He didn't just wander into the red-light district, he went for a massive bender in it... I have him to thank for getting sacked and for me getting my first break

At this place we all know what we're doing, we're extremely careful with the gear. The problem is that the bloke who sorts all of the equipment for us has a reputation everywhere for doing it on the cheap and ripping people off. The gear he fits is second hand or has been gathering dust somewhere without being serviced or looked after. Because he's a 'friend' of the owner, we're having a hard time getting shot of him!

I guess with bars & their equipment its just like a point Jase raised earlier in the thread - if it works (even badly) they don't care (as it's still keeping the dosh rolling in), but as soon as there's no music and it threatens their income, they throw money at it straight away.

that sounds shit that like, guess all you can do is try and make the owner realise he's being mugged off, show him alternatives he could get for just slightly more/same/or best less money
