"Iraq, with a $252 per person a year income, would be at the bottom of least developed countries" - Hans von Sponeck 19 Jan 2000

Iraq has lingered around the bottom end of the LCD (least developed country) list since the 80's, despite vast oil reserves its citizens have always suffered from mass poverty... Do not confuse the health and education initiatives implimented by Saddam as the sign of a higher standard of life.

when the governeing body of a nation is removed/overthrown, the governments traditional opposition undergo extensive training so that the country doesn't become a lawless land.

This training is essential to the success of the regime change if the old government is to be kept out, laws are to be maintained and civil wars are to be avoided.

One has to engage in acts of terror before he can be classed as a terrorist.

Which acts of terror have the Kurds you're branding terrorists been engaged in?

I assume you mean the WTO list. I can't find Iraq on that list at all in the 80's

we're talking about specific groups..... hizbu'llah and the kurdish forces being trained to protect the airport.

Thats like saying the Irish are all terrorists because of the actions of the IRA?!?!?

looks like I misread my quote, in the 1990 and 1981 LDC Iraq were exempt from the list but a GDP per capita of $252 would of placed them near the bottom of the list.

Israel suffered the same fate when they funded Hamas.... lord knows what the Israeli's were thinking - the mujahideen were an easy mistake - but supporting Hamas?!?!?!?

In defence of the CIA we weren't aware of muslim fundamentalism back then, they were just percieved to be another revolutionary militia.... boy did we misjudge that ;)

The Kurds would have no cause to attack the US or Israeli's.

They also make up a large proportion of the new Iraqi security forces - so their training is essential....

Yes, but what reason would the Afghans have had to attack the US a while ago?

If Israel wants to contribute to training of the national police force or army, I would be all for it, but training unregulated militia is asking for conflict.
