Smacking should not be illegal, overuse of it should. Also, hitting with a closed fist or causing bodily harm should of course remain banned.

I was never or hit in any way as a child ( you would understand if you knew my mother  ), and it didn't do me any harm. However, it is necessary, for some people and under certain circumstances.

"Divorcing" parents is a good option to have open for the most extreme cases in society IMO, however.

I still think that children are disciplined in entirely the wrong way - by using simple push-pull incentives like smacking, grounding, they largely avoid such annoyances by being out of reach of Mam and Dad on the street. The issues should be addressed in an adult fashion, with responsibility and power coming and going together, letting children take as much control as they can handle over time.

the more my mam grounded me, the more i rebelled and retalliated against her, but as soon as other things started to be taken away like pocket money, my tv ect i realised she meant business!!! think groundings 4 wen kids are to big to be smacked on the hand, as it proves no point to them, a 2 sec sting and they're away again..... but still i wouldn't like one off my mammy now!!!

i heard a debate about this on the radio. the parent who was on raised a very valid point, what happens when you NEED to tech a child a lesson for thier own safety , like they run out in the middle of the road? i reckon its up to the parents me, politicians have no right to interfere. bring them up right and there is no need to use violence.

Aint read the thread couldnt be bothered reading all the pink writing

"If you cant verbally outwit a child you shouldnt be allowed to have them" my grandad used to say. When I was a youngun I did as I was told cos I respected my mam and dad not because I was scared of getting beaten.

the threat of a smack is much worse than anything i'd ever inflict. overuse is pointless cause it deminishes the point of it.

what i can't stand is do-gooder lefties trying to tell me what i can and can't do in the raising of my children - i have common sense - i can think for myself.

exactly, my point is tell them1nce 2wice 3times your out. and i actually find that restraining my little one by making her sit on my knee and calming her down does more good than any smack does, but sometimes if only i had a bat!!!!
