Consumer products are alot cheaper now than 10 years ago even with inflation. Services are up but that's expected because people need to make a living and can't afford to not increase prices.

Not everything has tripled .. but in ten years the prices of alot of things have increased in price MASSIVELY.

    Tabs
    Petrol
    Gas
    Electric
    Car Insurance
    Road Tax
    Council tax

.... it depends on if you pay those though - If all you spent your cash on was dvd players and ipods then you might think that everything was gravy.

At the same time, wages havent doubled - so quality of life has went DOWN in terms of purchasing power.

Being able to buy cheap tat from tesco's does not mean your living the life of riley.

    Nor does buying cigarettes.

    Clothing
    electrical goods
    furniture
    cars
    airline flights

Things like petrol and such like have doubled in the last 10 years but they probably did in the ten years previous. I don't know if you're trying to blame the labour government here or what? ;) and council tax wasn't around 20 year ago.

I do agree that things are getting out of hand but I don't agree that people have a shitter lifestyle.

Not many families used to be able to afford to run two cars or take numerous holidays abroad every year, or sit watching 1000 channels of shite on sky on there 42 inch lcd tv. Maybe to you these things arnt having a good standard of living, but if they arnt then what is?

Just getting a mortgage that is 600 a month. Rent on a house like this when it's tidied up would be about 450-500. I'd rather pay the extra and be paying something off rather than lining the landlords pockets

in answer to the original post: buying is better as long as you are paying off some of the debt

if you are on interest only for more than a couple of years, you may as well be renting

it also depends what you are buying and where it is

When i bought my house in 98 i'd been renting a 2bed flat for £250 a month. The mortgage on my 2bed semi house cost me £103 a month when i first moved in. within 5 years the value had increased 4 fold and i made a nice sum when i sold it a few years ago.

nowadays we pay £425 for a 2bed semi, the same place to buy would cost us £700 per month and the prices are not gonna rise like they did when i first bought, more than likely they're gonna drop.

I bought my parents house in 04 for 56k, payments were 150 per month, I sold it in 06 for nearly 90k :O
Before buying I was renting it off them for 250 a month, 3 bed terrace.

Totally different now, its cheaper to rent, I can rent a 120k house off work for 525 a month, the mortgage on a 120k house is going to be nearly double that!
