I cant be arsed to read through everyones comments, but i work for halifax so ill let u no wat i no. Firsty, if you dont have a studet account, your guna get charged interest, it varys with each bank, but you only pay pennies to be honest. You more likely to get an overdraft if youve nevr been over £0. Halifax overdrafts are based on income, and account conduct, also savings within the bank. If you earn around £1000 per month, and have never gone over, you could get a £1000 pound overdraft. HSBC brought in yearly ovd charges when they got rid of their bank charges i think. Each bank has its own way of doing things.
They wont ask you to pay the overdraft back, unless you take the piss and dont pay anything in it, and leave it overdrawn, or if you constantly go over your limit, they may work out an agreement to pay it back.
Best way is to speak to someone, as most banks can over ride the recommended that they keep for you. As far as Im aware, bank charges on halifax accounts dont affect credit ratings, not sure on other banks. Overdrafts do, but if you treat it well it can become a plus. If you account goes into arrears and you have to pay it off, thats a bad bad mark on your file.
Anything else just drop me a PM and ill tell you if I know.

HSBC introduced it about a year ago now I think, may not be as long ago, but it's only if you apply for a new one. If you already have one then they don't charge you, and it is automatically renewed most of the time, it must be against the terms and conditions or something as they probably would if they could. If you want to review it and increase it, then they charge you £25, and they charge it every year it is renewed as far as I'm aware although I don't get involved in overdrafts much

they've started being very strict on waiving fees or anything now as well as they now seem to have the opinion that cos they are quite a strong bank since the whole crisis has been going on, they shouldnt have to do anyone any favours! we used to have leeway with mortgage fees and rates but they're not interested any more and won't do anyone any favours

He sure did. On this note I am wounded. I was also 310 overdrawn on a bank account that only has a 100 overdraft & 60 overdrawn on another bank account that doesnt even have an overdraft, thats 270 in charges in a month. Came straight off my 'not overpaid although it was suppose to be' wages. WOUNDED.

    * The letter to Halifax has already been typed out this morning claiming them back, in a bank account I've had for just under 18 month I reckon I'm owed well over a grand in charges.
