I had a really good night but it was rather surprising. Contrary to what I expected before the night, Oakey was better than O'Bir!!

Must just say R&D played a quality warm up set with tunes such as Supermodels from Paris and Loving Arms and martin roth's mix of love shine's through.

I had never seen Oakenfold before and had heard about him being shit but personally I thought he played the set of the night (quite easily). It was absolutey class!! There were a few tunes that seemed a little out of place/took it down when it should have gone up etc but for me this set proved that when Oakey brings his A-game (which he did last night) he is awesome!!

It was also very refreshing to hear a trance set and hardly know any of the tunes. One that I did know was when he went a bit harder towards the end and played Fred Baker - Total Blackout:eek:     Unbelievable when he played this, one of the tunes of the night.

He warmed it up nicely with some housy/proggy stuff but then after about 45 mins turned to some of the tastiest trance I have heard at a club in a long time. No idea what any of it was, but it was absolutely lush and it properly put me in a dazed trance of lushness! Exactly what a trance DJ should be doing in his set!

Moving onto O'Bir, he played some great tunes but for me was distinctly average and not what I wanted or expected from an O'Bir set. He just stuck to the same banging/uplifting trance all the way through and didn't take it up or down at all but was at a constant throughout. He played NOTHING that I would consider to be my fave type of trance, i.e. floaty/epicy stuff (apart from maybe sun decade but that still goes banging) but instead proceeded to play a whole host of generic bosh-trance.

Tunes that I really did enjoy in his set were...

Gareth Emery vs Lange - Another You Another Me
Sun Decade - I'm Alone (Stoneface & Terminal Mix)
Stoneface & Terminal - Another Day

I really wanted to hear Brendon LaBonte - Finding a Way and my friend texted Jon to ask him to play it and then I even made a sign to hold up which he saw, ackowledged but then didnt play. :( Obv. his choice what he plays but it wud have been nice to hear it (theres an understatement).

But I just don't understand this mentality of 'if you are playing the last set you have to play completely banging'

Whats that all about? When it's 3 O'clock in the morning I want some of that but I want it mixed up with some lush, dreamy trance which is, after all how Jon O'Bir made a name for himself in the first place! So yes, I was very disappointed. What happened to tracks like (From his last ways&means)...

Airwave – People Just Don’t Care
Brenden LaBonte – Finding a Way
Kenidel Lopez – Heavens Caliber (Thomas Datt Remix)

That's the sort of stuff that makes me tick, yet for some reason he didnt play anythig like them at all. Was just one tune after another that much of a muchness tbh. I thought he need to pad them out with some softer stuff.

Anyway, Oakey is king of trance! :king:

In all fairness you are a regular on ultimatebuzz.

Oakenfold has championed music by some of the best and most inovating trance producers of the last decade, like Oliver Lieb, The Man With No Name, Tilt, Hallucinogen mixed up with quality prog. Oakenfolds tracklists show that he has always had a penchant for picking good quality trance in comparison to practically any of the new school, why do you think he's the only one to have done a GU.

I have no doubt that he was/sometimes is shit hot with his track selection but he cant be arsed anymore and would prefer to get wrecked than put the effort in anymore. He might well of been good at digital last night but some of his sets have been a fucking disgrace this year (mixing wise not tune wise), you might not be bothered about the mixing but some people are

If you're on about his essential mixes I'm not suprised as they seemed to be massive promotions for his album release. I've seen him three times and not only did his mixing sound fine but his track selection was spot on.

Oakenfold seemed completely sober and his mixing in general was very tight apart from perhaps one or two mixes and they weren't exactly trainwrecks either, just slightly out and then quickly corrected.

If i wasnt mortal i reckon there would of been a few kick off's, people far too off there face not knowing who what or where, shouting Oakenfold when O'Bir was on - people standing on me toes constantly, drinks flying all over.

Obviously you cant pick a crowd and i cant say i am "ya average clubber" but it just pisses me off the way some people go on, anyways i still had a mint time n the banter was immense ;)

You're right, the crowd was absolutely disgraceful like. I got a cigarette through me top, drink spilled on me, feet trodden on, I even got hugged by sweaty men talking about eddie halliwell!  People just didnt have a clue where they were or what they were doing and kept bumping into you. Was an absolute joke!

lmfao It's funny how as people get older and have had a few clubbing years behind them they seem to moan about everything. The crowd, DJ's, bouncers etc.
It reminds me of on human traffic when the two people are having a conversation, on a couch in a club, about clubbing 'back in the day' and he's proper edgy with everyone.

Whats that got to do with anything?

What I'm saying is, it's not the nights that are changing as such, it's you as a clubber.

It's like the age old question "are pills getting shitter or is it just because I'm getting older?"

I dont generally complain and wouldnt go as far as saying "well i am not going next time" cos i have supported the majority of well known Trance nights in different clubs and seen some shocking crowds but at the same time i probably wouldnt of noticed all this if i had of been surfing the buzz.

I gathered you and Lee werent necking on with whoever did what they did judging by the photos anyways.

    ;)

I wasn't having a go at you mate! But in general as an observation of this board over the last couple of years. When I first signed up nee one would moan about the nights out they had. Now that's all everyone does!

"I'm sick of not having a decent trance night". Then one comes along and nee cunt goes.
