Sorry, but I dont agree. Even if a child is "raised well", alsorts of things can go wrong. Look at school meals.....when I was at school, healthy meals were hard to find. What does that do for a "well raised" kid? Bring sandwiches everyday??? :spangled: Not exactly fair.

Also not all parents can raise there kids well enuf for them to want/know how to look after themselves properly. What if they themselves werent raised "correctly"? How would they then know? Some parents dont have the money or even in extreme cases the time to make sure their kids are eating healthy/smoking etc. Some ppl work so many hrs a day to keep their kids alive, they cant give their kids the "well raised" upbringing they should get. Who do you blame then??? The parents that are busting a gut just to keep a roof over their kids heads?

I dont think anyone can blame either the individual or the govenment specifically. Its a mixture of factors from all diff areas. :)

In no way in my contribution in this thread am I acting in an argumentative manner and wish only to put my views on display :D

i agree with ness - the responsibility is with the parents, its cheaper to eat healthily than to eat junk food nowadays...

regarding exercise.. 10 years ago the number of primary school children walking to school was around 7 in 10...

last year in was only 2 in 10...

    that tells me a lot...

Has no one mentioned in this thread that there is a lot of overweight people who no matter what they do still put on weight? its all down to metabolism (sp) and theres some people who eat hardly anything and are still very big but theres dead skinny people who eat absoloutly loads n stay dead thin!

People seem to forget 2 major points here!

Most unhealty food actually tastes nicer than the healtier option, thus meaning most kids, etc are going to choose fatty foods, no matter what the parents etc do!!

The other thing is quickness. When I was at school we used to quickly go to the shops, get some crisps, chocolate, then straight back to school for footbal and that. It's the same thing in a lot of situations now. Shall I go cook a healthy tea which will take about an hour, etc, or just pop to the chippy, macdonalds, etc?? You see the point I'm getting at??:)

BMI is a guideline, and although not concrete in all circumstances, can be quite useful. I do understand though, that there are 'large' people that owe this not to an unhealthy lifestyle, but to more serious medical problems.
Yours also may be a case of a diet based on foods high in High-Density Lipoproteins, as these prevent Low Density Lipoproteins, which cause high cholesterol. You should also find out your blood Triglyceride level, as these are another form of lipid that can cause heart problems. The chances are though that you could still develop problems such as Hypertension, CAD, Diabetes, etc.

And the salad comments > Salad is 90% water. Drinking a few pints of H20 will give the same effect :p

the problem of obesity is that people are eating junk food and lots of it as opposed to healthy food and less of it combined with an absoloute lack of exercise - especially walking.

miller - i think most junk food tastes really bland tbh - mcdonalds/ kfc etc dont fill me up at all and are stupidly expensive for a piece of 'meat' and bread...

i virtually cut caffeine out of my diet a while back before my final exams/ dissertation because i felt permanantley lethargic.. this meant chocolate/ fizzy drinks especially.. now i feel a lot more lively and have really realised how shit fizzy drinks taste and how bad they they are for you... i also cut down on crisps and snacks and started eating potatoes and pasta more..

ive got more money in my pocket, i eat better and feel better..

    obese people - no excuse.
