I can't think of an downside to chicken salad mind.

Unless you are crushed by a falling piano on the way to pick up your chicken salad.

Even in an "ideal" world, parents are not the only influence on their kids. Toddlers, yes because how can they argue with their parents realistically? Youre forgetting that friends, tv, ppl at school, all have influence over young kids, not only when it comes to food also.

I dont disagree fully with you, and yet I dont agree with you either. I think its a bunch of factors that both you, Brid and B.O.B have brought up. You cant just single out one factor.

That's cool with me, I'm already with Bupa. :D

What annoys me about the whole obesity thing is the side industry that has come out of it. The whole '33%' less fat shite that is blatently targeted at dieting woman who fall for the gimicks.

My burd came in with a packet of 33% less fat pringles thinking she was being really good until I burst her bubble and showed her there was more fat in them than a packet of walkers.

take warmth in the fact that we will all die in out 50's so we won't put additional strain on the NHS with geriatric care. It's the skinny pill heads and their parkinsons diseases that'll be using all your poor tax money well after i'm gone. Take solice - not long now....

The government's view on obesity is ridiculous. It is based mainly around BMI, which is SOLELY based on the proportion of weight per unit height.

I know people, as I am sure you all do too, who are reasonably slim to look at, but because of an unhealthy cardiovascular system and the little fat that they do eat being saturated and LDL cholesterol, cannot run 50 feet to save their lives.

By BMI, I am morbidly obese, and should bedead before I reach 25. However, on a rowing machine, I can beat most people, including some who think they are very fit with 6 packs and ripped pecs. My blood LDL cholesterol level is very low, my heart rests aty 56 bpm, my blood pressure is average for my age.

I think the GD government should focus more on cardiovascular fitness and less on subcutaneous fat levels and weight to height ratio - it sends out the wrong message.

    erm... no.

government guidlines use the BMI as a guide, but the guidelines are for health care professionals to use as a resource, an i don't think they'd class you as obese. (but the BMI is useless really, even government officials admit they only use it as a means of quantitively showing those who are obese just HOW obese they are)

their stance on obesity is shifting more towards the introduction of physical activity, which is also recommended by the largest health organisation in the world (WHO). but how can they make people follow their advise? whatever they do/say most of the fat fucks will still choose the same behaviour.

how do you measure every1's cardiovascular fitness realistically? it can't be done effectively, especially taking into account that most of the people we are talking about will be in the 'moderate risk' grouping for CHD - where maximal testing is not advisable (or safe).

On the contrary, when my doctor heard what my weight was and how much I eat, he nearly busted a gut, and expected me to have a crap level of fitness. He repeatedly referred to BMI, using the phrase I mentioned earlier, "morbidly obese", aka 2 times the normal BMI for my height. He clearly was worried about my health simply based on the weight figure.

Which proved unfounded, when I was assessed.

The thing is, subcutaneous fat is _not_ a health risk on its own without complicating factors, and the correlation between subcutaneous fat levels and cardiovascular fitness, although reasonable, is low enough that it should not be the basis of the main thrust of our proactive health policy.

SHUSH!!!!! what u playin at woman?! don't start tellin people that man!!!!
just remember spence......"distinct lack of social life"!

on the obesity side of things i personally think its up to the individual. whether its their lifestyle, their diet or their toilet habits, as long as it doesn't harm any1 but that individual, let them get on with it.

blaming the government for the weight problems of the uk today is ridiculous, i do agree tho that when it comes to todays kids its down to the parents. someone said earlier that there are temptations and influences from tv, friends, while at school etc, however if the parent/parents have raised that child well then they should be sensible when it comes to eating junk such as sweets etc.

i also think that a lot has to do with kids eating too much ket (sweets). i was havin a conversation with a friend of mine about methods in bringing up children and one of the points she mentioned was that a lot of parents these days seem to use sweets as a way of shutting up their kids while they trail round the shops or whatever. thats just plain wrong.
