Thought that was probably it - I used to have some of my lectures in there! Wasn't sure at first if the Union had gone too.

I can see myself doing that in the future ...

... blood is thicker than water, and i dont want to be on one half of the country when my family are knocking on in the old age department.

Either that, or i start shopping around for really cheap care homes.

I've had the fortune to land a well paid job up north, so the wages aren't really an issue for me.

I can't see myself staying here all my life though. My job allows me to move up and down the country depending on what project I'm working on, so I think I'll take advantage of it and see what the rest of the UK has to offer..

This is bollocks really. If you earn £25,000 then you have an nice apartment, car and spending money in Newcastle. In london you have a small room, a longer commute and less spending money so I don't really see how you can have a 'better quality of life'. Commuting costs slightly more and takes longer, drinks out quite a bit more but everything else is the same price. I don't earn any more than I would in the North, but then I knew I wouldnt, and I wanted to live in london.

From what I can tell, it's massively overcrowded already and it's the last place that needs an influx of people from the north. That would put costs up and living standards down even more. What is needed is a proper high speed rail link.

I dont see what a rail link will do, if theres no incentive to move industries and jobs BACK up north.

If i was in charge, i'd introduce some kind of economic zoning based on the type of industry .... maybe if company tax for IT companies, or pharmaceuticals, or whatever was say HALF what it was in the south (and increase it in the south) then there'd be no excuse not to relocate up there.

The problem is that living in the south and working down here you soon see that to alot of people down here theres just no incentive for them to just up sticks and move up north where the skills pool is less.

    Which i dont agree with.

There's cheaper office space and labour in the north anyway. I don't know why more government offices don't move. Obviously my 200mph rail link would have to cost less than a tenner each way as well

The north needs a greater proportion of non government jobs ... its bad enough as is with over 2/3 of the economy being reliant on the state.

A good balance would be better .... unfortunately i think some people reckon a fast train is going to suddenly make things all ok all of a sudden....
