I think you're missing a key word. "Scare".

He's not comparing it to actual attacks, and the point he's trying to make is about media hype, and someone somewhere reaping the benefit of it (Governments ramping up anti-terror legislation or the WHO justifying its existence, in this case)

It's a bollocks article anyway. I don't see why the media, having been totally unreasonably panicked at first, are now finding people to say how it's blown out of all proportion and no one should worry at all etc.

Why can't they report an accurate middle ground of how there is a risk, but nobody really can measure it, instead of these huge exagerations from either end of the spectrum.

It is a shit article but even in the context of a 'Scare' the 2 are still so different, 1 can be contained & prevented with the aid of qualified doctors, hospitals, prescription drugs etc... the other has to rely so many different factors for it to be prevented or to not cause mass panic.... if it even can.

Congress were all on anti anthrax drugs weeks before the anthrax attacks 'happened'. Wonder how they knew ;) And the anthrax was later found to be bio weapons grade, and came from a military lab in the USA.

7/7 - Various people were warned not to go into London or move about that day. The Israeli chancellor (now the PM) was warned on the day of the attacks 'not to leave his hotel' right before everything kicked off.

So aye, a few were warned ;)

SKY NEWS just had a thing on Flu prevention.

Apparently women can reduce their chances of catching airbourne viruses by having a large quantity of hot semen sprayed (or 'jizzed' as the doctor on the news article described) into the back of their throat. Supposedly the common 'blowjob' is the reccomended way of doing it, and you should repeat this every 2 hours until the threat level from the World Health Organisation is reduced from 6 to a 2.

Apparently it coats the mucus membranes and protects against anything nasty.

Sounded a bit wierd to me.

    Terrorist 'scares' cause mass panic.

Health scares are exactly the same, caused by the media.

so basically, the coverage is the most elaborate tail of the passage of a single strain of 'not that serious' flu around the world? seems like a goose chase to me - it's nice to know how fast flu actually does travel - and where too.

however all i'm worried about is - that if people dont take this seriously enough, and start to ignore warnings - because this is such an easy one to pick up wont it be around for AGES? and eventually will everyone end up with it and be off work.

a majority off work with swine flu... another downturn in the economy?

    @ Proud;

Terrorist Scare's & Bio/Media Scares are EXACTLY the same thing IMO. and the BBC has alot to answer for for making this a fucking massive deal if it turns out to be like the normal flu. they basically stated on the news last night that everyone should panic (in a round about way) and make sure they sleep with one eye open for wayward mexicans.

Again the 2 cant be compared?

A pandemic which has been highly documented in the media with precautions put in place nationally weeks in advance to prevent it simply cant be compared with a Terrorist threat which we potentially know nothing about until it has either happened or been foiled?

If were on about the imminence of the 2 then maybe, yes. But then again im scared of being hit by a bus on my way to work everyday & that threat is also a potential, but id never compare the 2 in the same context.

There's little difference. The general public is in uproar about Swine Flu and tbh hardly anyone knows much about it. It's the sudden appearance on the news and the articles in the paper that are making people freak out first, and then find out the details later.
