that just makes me think that the tracks he plays are so shite that the only way he can get a crowd dancing is to act like a performing monkey behind the decks

Had up there ........ Ive defended Eddie on other topics before and i still think he's incredibly talented - and his Set from Port Lush / Rush is still played on my ipod when im at the gym ...

.... BUT anyone who loops adagio for strings for 10 minutes, or does that bloody helicopter/cdj noise trick for the hundredth time and still has people cheering .... has to be looked at.

I respect eddie alot - but not when it comes to playing rubbish to a crowd of mongs, and still having them cheering!

I would say the 'scene' has gone way beyond a DJ being able to just mix tunes and pull a few tricks .......... its nothing that any old bedroom DJ can/could do (better).

....... Anyone in the 'top 5' for me has to be able to DJ, run a night, run a label, produce or at least do something more meaningul than turn up - jump around behind the decks and collect 2 grand before nipping back to the hotel for a romp with the groupies.

To be fair, that Penton mix is the one I'm listening to most at the moment, if only for the tunes - all good, some excellent, most importantly all new (to me anyway).

MoS is spot on with trance mixes these days - technology and increasing standards means they're all flawless, but thats not necessarily what makes an outstanding DJ. You have to do something different, and it pains me to say it but scruf is right - trance is a fairly limited genre.

Therefore a pure trance night won't work.

2 hours of trance 2-4, with a house, prog, electro and techno warm up, with some surprises in there and some classics, with reasonable entry, a top crowd, a drinks offer or 2, and something a bit different, a VJ, some entertainers, some mint decor, whatever WILL work.

I would love to see a crowds face when someone plays a smoochy disco track straight after some offside grinding techno

In fact, what I've just described was Ahead - they developed a decent fan base in sheffield, then fucked it up by trying to go more trendy in birmingham, and sacking the sheffield lot off.

They were also crippled by their venue, and it was just a bit too line-up lead, which shouldn't be such an issue in this case.

The one person I've seen who could really pull that kind of thing off was Tenaglia (OK, so maybe not straight after, but you know what I mean).
