lol - I remember checking cassidies out years ago (I presume there's only one club in birtley?) - had some potential apart from the fact it's absolutely surrounded by houses so there's major noise pollution issues, plus it's in birtley.

basically anywhere trying to open up an afterdark / new monkey style venue around here is pretty much on a hiding to nothing as it's virtually the first thing the police ask anyone applying for a licence for a new venue. IIRC they got away with it in the past by doing it as a private members club so it didn't need a licence, plus at various points closing it down (or being closed down) when the heat got too much then reopening the next week with a new name on the documents so they'd have to start any proceedings against them from scratch (more the afterdark than new monkey i think).

the licencing act last year closed pretty much all these loopholes so they're pretty much fucked other than occasional hit and run parties disguised as birthday parties etc.

personally I predict a load of makina warehouse parties kicking off at some point soon if they don't get somewhere sorted to go, followed closely by pitch battles with the police as they try to impound the rigs then a new wave of riots in a couple of years...

yeah I know... just making the point that for me after dark music used to mean proper banging detroit techno in one of the best clubs on the planet
