a couple of years ago i broke two knuckles in my right hand (4th and 5th mcp), which required some surgery and three kirschner wires (pins) being stuck through the latter three carpal bones of my hand, so i had three big metal wires sticking out of the side of my palm for a month.
surprisingly enough, the original fracture didn't hurt, but having the pins removed did. all the doctor (sho) did to remove them was grab the ends of the wires with some pliers, and yank them out. didn't help that the skin of my hand had stuck to the pins either, so as well as the immense pain from inside the bones of my hand, the entry holes were pissing with blood. the medical student who was sitting in couldn't help grimacing!
