Joe - if you bother actually reading my posts you will see I have not claimed that Egypt Cottage is the only place doing it. And Vuzz put Egypt Cottage on the map only for a certain group of people. Sunday Trading did it for another group, Spank for yet another group and so on. And if you think that Egypt Cottage only gets passers by and a gay crowd the rest of the time then you are sadly mistaken. When did you last go on a night (or during the day) other than Vuzz? Vuzz is a good night, don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to take away from anything that they have accomplished. I'm just saying that it isn't the be all and end all of the Egypt Cottage.
Spank has a good sized crowd in every week. Last time I went to Vuzz there was me, Si, Princess Jane, a couple of others and the DJs. If you actually went to any other nights there, I might listen to you.
It doesn't matter whether you listen to me or not BOB as your wrong. EC are doing small promoters NO favours by providing a venue... Its a business partnerhsip... Lets lok at the facts. Not many promoters would pay to use EC as they can get better located/furnished bars for free. Without small promoters EC would lose a lot of its customers and its current reputation. How is EC doing any1 a favour? It is a business and the busiiness it provides is an alterntive venue to support up and coming nights, EC would have a huge job providing this service without the prmoters as its a amassive amount of time and money. Your living on another planet if u think EC are doing promoters some huge favour.. THEY ARE A BUSINESS and in their market it is the norm for a venue of their standard not to charge. If they want to become a local pub, gay bar, beer boy den, whatever... let them do it - but I think they'd be hard pushed to get people to trek that far off the beaten track.
I didn't say they were doing them a huge favour, I was just answering Revel's post which was having a go at the Egypt Cottage by saying that without it, a lot of DJs would have found it harder to get any exposure. Not that they couldn't have, just that Egypt Cottage has been one of the venues that has given people that opportunity. Vuzz, and other promoters, have worked hard and done well, and I wouldn't take that away from them. I have a lot of respect for what they have done. However, I am NOT wrong in saying that Vuzz isn't the be all and end all of Egypt Cottage. If you honestly think that a pub can survive on say fifty people coming in twice a month, who, demographically speaking, are not the highest spenders, then you are sorely mistaken.
I never said it was, I said vuzz put it on the map, media coverage, warm-up to one of newcastles biggest crowd and a very heavy flyer and poster presence in town.... Just like I can't take away what EC has done for local producers/dj's you can't take away what vuzz has done for EC.
I stand by what I said before. Vuzz has put Egypt Cottage on the map for a certain group of people. I do however know people who go to Egypt Cottage who have probably never heard of Vuzz, because they don't go on a Friday and don't go to Promise etc. Just as I'm sure that there are people who go to Vuzz who have never heard of Spank.
I wasn't wrong, and I'm still not wrong. Read through my posts Joe, I haven't contradicted myself. My argument has been: Egypt Cottage is one of the relatively few venues to give small promoters and first time DJs a chance. Vuzz is a good night, and has without doubt enhanced Egypt Cottage's standing with a certain group of people. There are other nights that, if you added the takings up over the month, bring in more revenue than Vuzz. There are people who go to Egypt Cottage who have never heard of Vuzz. Now, tell me, where am I wrong?
course your not wrong helen. EC was doing well before Vuzz, and would still do well if Vuzz stoped. EC and Neil have been good to let nights go on there. There arent that many places (Clear (cursed bar) + Stout Fiddler) that let small night happen.
I'm not disputiung any of those facts, infact I agree with all of them I have not disputed these facts once my objection was too this: You made out that EC were doing promoters a big favour when infact they are a business trying to make money, now neil may be very passionate about his business - but it is still a fucking business! And revel there are far more bars available than just clear bar and stout...
I said that there weren't many venues where promoters can get a decent night of the week (ie Friday or Saturday), for no fee, and with the support of the manager. Which is true. Note it says, "Egypt Cottage and other venues". I didn't imply that any favours were being done, or that it was not a business decision. However, Neil stood by nights that didn't make much money, particulary to start with, for far longer than the vast majority of managers would. As an aside, Neil isn't there anymore anyway.
When I go its approx £10+ a round & I am only buying 2 DRINKS!!!! Treble Smirnoff X 2 + 1 can Red Bull in a pint glass PLEASE NOTE NO CHEAP VODIE OR CHEAP NRG DRINK
I think you're the exception though. That's probably more than most people would spend in there all night!
Vuzz has given EC some/most of its busiest nights upstairs & they have given Bedroom DJs chances! FACT Neil put the effort into EC & he put EC on the map & he also gave people chances! FACT I dont think anyone owes anyone & everyone appreciates eachother.
I'm honestly not having a go at people who do that, as in most cases that is all they can afford, which is fair enough. I was just trying to point out to Joe that Vuzz is probably not the highest taking night in terms of bar revenue. And you're right - both sides have benefited from the arrangement. I just took exception to people saying EC is a crap venue.
