Well ok, each to their own, but nearly every night at Lemon Lounge seems to be successful. Maybe it's for people with different opinions to you though. People that want to go out to stick their head down and dance the night away, rather than whinge about the club. The size is a good thing too. Because it's relatively small, it don;t take much to fill it. Once you do well there for a little while, there's always the Masque

Their roots?!?!?!? I can think of 2 dj's who've progressed past the ec the ec stage Bigdave (assension) Uncle ste (sundis) How can u forget ur roots when ur still @ that level Think bob was implying they wouldn't of played public and probably still wouldn't be playing in public, Vuzz wasn't just a platform for local dj's it was the inspiration for many wanna be nights
Think bob meant egypt cottage mate I used vuzz as most the folk who've gone on to start their own thing weren't st regulars
I meant Egypt Cottage and other venues that allow small first-time promoters and DJs to use their venues when most other places would just laugh at them. Yes, the venues aren't exactly the Republic, but where else could you get a decent night of the week, often with no fee (or just a small deposit for damage), and the support of the manager? Not to mention that they keep the drinks prices down too.
There are two sides to that coin, the promoters aren't doing them a big favour... the nights bring a lot of punters to the premisis.
I think a lot of punters is a slight exaggeration. Half the time it costs the bar as much in terms of staff wages, heating, electricity etc as it will take in revenue! The thing with the Egypt Cottage was that you had a manager who believed in what he was doing, ie giving local nights and local DJs a chance.
BOB I'm sorry when promise is on Vuzz brings a lot fo punters. If it wasn't for these nights EC would have very few customers... this isn't a case of ec being overly generous, they're trying to make money! To promote nights cost money... why do it yourself when you can have promoters more in touch with the local communities to do it for you. do u honestly think ec are doing promoters a huge favour by allowingh them to use a dank backroom? These small nights can bring a lot of ciustomers to a pub they wouldn't usually go. ffs vuzz, st and promise have put ec on the map
But when Promise isn't on it doesn't (like no-one there at all a couple of weeks ago), which is half of the time. A lot of other venues would have shut it down. Yes Vuzz has brought in people that wouldn't normally go there. However, without Sunday Trading, nights like Vuzz wouldn't have been there at all, so lets not try to say that Vuzz has done everything for the Egypt Cottage. There are also other nights that go on in there which pull in a fair amount of people. You also seem to forget that the Egypt Cottage has been there for years and has been doing quite nicely thank you without all the nights that go on there now. Of course Egypt Cottage is a business and wouldn't run things if it was regularly losing money, but a lot of places simply wouldn't bother, or would charge promoters for the pleasure. I don't think you can so easily underestimate what people like Neil have done for local promoters and DJs.
I'm not taking anything away from Sunday trading, it did lay the foundation for Vuzz, but Vuzz put ec on the map - not sunday trading. But I think the rest of what you wrote is tosh, EC isn't the only venue giving promoters a chance, almost every small bar off the beaten track does this - some are also a lot more prestigeous than EC (take clear bar for example)... I also think you have a very naive outlook on business if you think that because something has been there a long time, it can survive with its current business model... Clubbing/pubbing is in a huge state of decline - without small promoters like vuzz the only punters EC would see would be passers by, locals and a small number of the gay community, As in reality Newcastle has moved on, there are now bigger and better bars for everyone. I am not taking anything away from EC but you also can't take anything away from the promoters... EC aren't foing Vuzz a huge favour by letting them have the backroom - Vuzz is bringing in fucking customers! Its a partnership they both bring something to the table and would find it very ahrd to exist without each other.
