They're better off hiding their faces because they're all ugly.

no the veil is a sign of modesty, its the same reason nuns and orthodox jews cover their hair... a veiled hijab is just amore commited version of this headscarf.

    Nothing to do with oppression.

Andy if you're using women forced to veil up as a justification for a ban then you need to be able to support your statement!

Of course I can't provide statistics, but I'm not trying to force my belief spectrum onto others!

Why do you keep talking about honour killings? It's as if you're attempting to incriminate through association.

Also why are you talking about Afghanistan? We're talking about British muslims, the vast majority of whom aren't from Afghanistan.

You can't force someone to follow your beliefs, if a man and a woman chose to subscribe to a lifestyle that you consider alien - what fucking right to you have to deny them this?

you're not g-d andy.... You're prone to the same human error as the rest of us... You have no right to dictate how others should lead their life....

I've said nothing about a ban?! :dunce:

I believe the debate was about whether or not it could represent oppression in some cases, and whether or not it was appropriate for Straw to ask if people would mind removing the veil, if not seeing their faces made him feel awkward.

It's hardly playing 'god' to say that immigrants to this country should respect our laws.

It's not 'forcing assimilation' to help them to learn our language, to enable them to better contribute.

It's not wrong to ask that where they have come from a culture that does not provide equal status to women as to men that they respect the fact that we feel they are equal.

These are practical matters that will enable immigrants and the native population to interact more effectively, more productively, and ultimately improve cohesion.

I work with a great many skilled foreign workers all the time - they bring a huge amount to our country, and I welcome them as I would wish to welcomed in another country (ie Canada this summer).
