no, I'm saying it may have made life a bit easier for satellite if it was still there. The fact it was so far away from any other bar didn't count in its favour.

It's always the same walking "off the beaten track" so to speak. People don't seem to be interested if the venue takes ages to get to.

I don't really think you can't blame foundation's demise solely on digital. There were other contributing factors - a piss poor promotion strategy that relied solely on student nights to make the numbers through the doors... no attempt to refit the venue to make the place better, no organised attempt to fight digital...

to be honest the shindig lads showed how it could have been when they did nye there last year - they had a top notch soundsystem in there, everything was spot on and it was a great night. The venue still had what it took, the management behind it didn't.

I knew mark deakin would get mentioned at some point lol

thing is the strategy could have been oh so simple

half THE entry price vs digital entry and reduce drinks prices

"get brained" was rammed when they pursued this policy

    hardly rocket science

digital was always going to have a 6mth honeymoon period where everyone went to check it out

it would be interesting if a foundation style venue opened up again now

I know it's probably stupid to compare the two, but we had a similar thing in consett about 7 years back...

we had a 1300 capacity nightclub open and it kicked the absolute shite out of all of the smaller nightclubs, including the place where I currently work. Everyone went there as soon as it opened and didn't bother going to any of the other places.

The owner closed our venue, gave it a massive refit, and reopened it, with the policy of keeping all the nobheads out and having the drinks fairly cheap with a good music policy. The people up the road played the get rich quick game, didn't refurb the venue (and still haven't), played to the chav masses and now every weekend we're rammed and they're completely empty

you're right about the honeymoon period, people always like to go and check out the new club in town... but long term it won't keep them going back if the competition is better

they can still have a livelihood with 90% of the pie

    trouble is they want 100%

there should be a consumer watchdog for clubbing

I could do my job for the money I'm on now, or I could aim for a pay rise. It's not rocket science.

But there are more small nights now than there ever were in the past! Go back to around '96, there was only really Shindig and Nice that were regular.

no it isn't... supermarkets killed off the corner shops because they offered everything under one roof and value for money.

digital may approach offering the former, but it definitely isn't the latter...

when I go for a pay rise tho I am pretty sure it is often not putting someone else out of work

i dont know why people havent sussed they want as much money out of the toon market so they can open up a chain of digitals nationwide

less competition = more money = more operating wonga nationwide

competition isnt bad if it improves what is on offer overall

they may swallow up the market in the short term but in the long run the punters will go for quality over quantity

Theres no way digital is preventing or a threat to other smaller nights in town. Quite the opposite, Digital should be very concerned imo at the quality of upcoming nights and local DJs.

The clientele recently of digital is a bit of a joke - chavs trying to get away with smoking on the dancefloor and dealing cowies in the toilets.

The continual booking of big name DJs in that air hanger of a main room just isnt cutting it anymore i reckon.

    viva Habit, Error....etc

    :)

nothing but imho it has led to the demise of a really good night

    junior g.

digital are watching what is happening, thats why wax: on now runs the same night as habit

tbh the club based night that will end up running rings round them all is error , that's if people dont get bored of the cosmic glitterball

This gets talked about on here every two weeks you bunch of communists.

You have to ask 2 questions if you want to put a night on in Newcastle; is there a market for the night I want to run?

What is my motivation for doing it?

The simple fact is, clubbing is not as popular as it once was and smaller nights will struggle to fill stuff up. I'm sure this is effecting Digital too (maybe to a lesser extent) but I'd imagine that they have fairly aggressive sales targets by the fact that they have just opened a club in Brighton, you can't really blame them for wanting to fill their club.
