suppose it pulls some people away but not too many, on the positive side, for people not old enought to go out it gets them into the music and away from rock etc!!

tunes that do well and are by or remixed by 'proper' artists may get them interested in that artist eg tiesto!!and they may gradually get more and more into the music thus filling the clubs more!!

Wwas there really a problem in the first place?? or was it more hype and a bit panic started by GC going monthly? I've got no idea if attendance has been down overall last few months, if thats the case is it maybe cos lotta students are skint at the end of year/staying in revising for exams/saving for the summer rather than turning their backs on clubbing???

Quote from GC e-flyer just before their last weekly night: "The end of clubbing as we know it", arrogant bollox. Just cos GC were seeing punter numbers down is not necessarily a reflection of the state of clubbing generally in the UK.

Funny enuff M8 had big article in this month about exactly this. They asked most of the big clubs, most of whom said there was no crisis, with a few saying there was. only GC and Cream declined to comment, hmmmmmm.

My view is that there is no real crisis, the market is still there, it just seems to be evolving fast at the moment, and some of the superclubs seem to have sat on their laurels a bit instead of evolving themselves, lost market share and blamed the market instead of looking at themselves. This happens all the time in business. As an analogy, years back IBM had the PC market sown up, thought they were unassailable until ppl like Compaq and Dell just whipped the market right from under them. This is what seems to be happening in clubland at the moment, superclubs losing ground to smaller upcoming clubs who listen to their customers and give them what they want instead of giving them what they think they should want.

A definite problem, and so said Passion, is the crippling fees demanded by superstar DJs, who force clubs to put up entrance fees and effectively prevent a lot of ppl going week in week out. I dunno what, for example, Jules/PVD/Tiesto charges in comparison to say Corvin/Eddie/Matt/Kerry James/Lee Foster (provocative!) but I'd just as soon see them than the big names anyway. Problem is the clubs pretty much need the big names to guarantee they'll fill the club every week.

In the same issue of M8 John Fleming sed "We're definitely not falling apart - how can that be said when clubs like GK, Slinky, Promise and the Gallery are still pulling in strong numbers every week?"

Can't wait to see him on Friday

how come sundiss packs em in every month at Norf and also gets the numbers at HQ then?

there isnt a demise in clubland IMO...just that crasher and cream have fallen from their superclub pedestals!!

cream lost the plot ages ago and got caught up in the whole 'we love prog' phase...

...and crasher is dying IMO because it is seen as unfashionable now...and no matter how good music wise crasher is, i dont think it will save it.

I think Trance has come back on the scene in the last 9 months or so. 2000 and the start of 2001 seemed to go very Housey in alot of clubs, but trance seemed to hit back around about August/Sep of last year, Trance tunes started to become that little bit harder some touching the trouser leg of Hard House. I must admit people go on about 1997, 98, 99 for Trance but I think the last 9 months have been the best for trance. There is such a big seperation between pop dance music (charva trance) and true trance (clubs like Promise, Godskitchen etc), i can only imagine it getting better too!!!!
