I saw Kerry today. At least I think I did. If it wasn't, she has a twin. Was gonna say hello, but instead opted for getting one of my mates to shout "Kerry" to see if it was really her :spangled:

    Smart-E,

I never said you needed a PHD to work in a studio, you did.

I merely outlined my chosen path, through music production, which involves gaining much needed knowledge through study. How can you not need this knowledge; that is a very misinformed opinion you have there. Some of the areas I have covered so far include:

    Music Language
    Computer Music Systems
    Sequencing
    Acoustics
    Process and Production
    Artist Management
    Audio Recording Techniques
    Contextual studies

I suppose you think these are useless for a career as a producer?

If you, or any board member, think that you can just waltz into a studio and knock out a tune, you are highly mistaken. Unless you can afford a qualified engineer, or have a good understanding of music and engineering, it is just not going to happen. Luck? It’s all about pre-production and planning.

Your buddies might tell you it’s wicked, but please, show me the publishing contract with Perfecto or EMI.

No reputable production house or studio is going to take you on as an engineer or producer without qualifications. No top DJ is going to ring you up and ask you to remix his or her track because you are 'kicking it' down the town. Again, your mates say it’s wicked, but it’s not going to pay the rent.

I understand the need for board members to rally round, when one of their number is 'ganged up on', but really, some of you need to exist in the real world.

I'm sure if Mozart never knew music theory, or never played the piano, he would still have 'had a go' and bashed out concertos in front of the crown princes of Europe. Yeah right!

I expect the usual array of replies, but save them till Thursday, because I'm off to York on Wednesday. Off to York you say?

Why? I'll tell you why. Steve Helstrip, aka The Thrillseekers has taken an interest in my production path. I am going down to learn from him and work on a tune together.

Now, all the rose tinted glasses crew read the next bit very carefully. I would NOT be doing this if I did not have a year’s production experience, based on my HND, under my belt. I would be useless to Steve in the studio, but, thanks to EDUCATION and STUDY, I am going to get to work with Steve and a few other DJ's in the studio, making tracks and building a production profile.

So, in a nutshell, you can all orbit your little worlds of make believe, ‘bigging’ each other up, but I choose to plod along in the real world, knowing what I am doing and where I am going. See you at the final party, or will I?

Hard work equals results and talent always shines though, but raw talent is not enough, it must be backed up with qualified education.

For those who are studying, I say stick in and work hard. For those who shun education, you are probably as stupid as your peers perceive you.

    Goodnight!

    Lee ;)

lee you need to get out more mate, your not writing a dissertation now :D :D :D

This wasn't a dig at you - why have you got so defensive? I'm sure the choice you've made suits you - your not an idiot... but just because steve's path of choice differs from yours it doesn't make his path the wrong one :D

And in studio work experience/skill tends to land you the job (if you want to be an engineer)... You know this though as you obviously do a lot of studio work... however I'd of thought you'd have your sights set a little higher than a sound enigneer - I'd of thought some one of your talents would want to produce his own tracks, as far as I know to make music does not require a qualification :D (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

goodnight sir... i await your next novel with great anticipation :D

    Book for Smart-E...

    Joe,

Bless you; I do get out enough, but thank you for your concern.

Being a sound engineer is only the start, it will lead to many things. I hope to produce many styles of music, for many artists, as well as my own material.

I'm not being defensive, if I was, you would know about it. ;)

As for setting my sights higher, really Joe, tsk tsk! *Waggles finger at a naughty child*

And another thing, I hope all those logged on at this time of night have not forgotten to do their homework, because if I find out you have....it'll be curtains!

    Lee :)

    Did Wyclef go to University?

He produces tons of good stuff - I don't think it's just his friends saying it's good either. I think Wylcef got his experience just from sitting in the studio with experienced people and learning things from them.

    Yawn...

Did Wyclef go to University? Maybe you should ask him. Either way, you are trying to indicate, with the context of your post, that education is not the way forward.

    *Yawn*

    There’s always one...

No my argument was that there is room for both education and work experience.

For the record, the studio work was unreal! My head was bursting from all the valuable knowledge I picked up yesterday.

I cant wait to back at the end of the month...
