Depends how much cash you got. Singapore seems to be the short break place for middle aged Australians cos of all the good shopping, food etc. Just don't get caught with any naughties or chewing gum.
I spent two weeks in Java - Jakarta, Bandung, Pangandaran, Yogyakarta, Mt Bromo, then two weeks in Bali - Lovina, Ubud and Kuta. I might have missed a couple of places out, can't remember! It was quite a while ago, September 1997.
I was in Solo, which is on Java island. We went to Borabodoa(sp) and up to Mount Etna not too long before it erupted. Debbie's dad works out there for a few months of the year so we went to see him. She's been loads of times and I'd love to do Bali and a few of the other places sometime. Great place, much more than I expected. We came through Jakarta airport on the way in, it was mental in there, just people everywhere.
Borobodur is one of the most amazing places I've ever been to. Jakarta is mad, I only spent one night there which was plenty! I'd recommend Pangandaran if you ever go back - there's a little place called Delta Gecko which is just outside it, it feels like you're on the Sixties hippy trail!
Borobodur was great, we saw some other temples near by too. They were a bit smaller but still great. I don't think i'd like Jakarta either, the airport was more than enough for me.
I'm off ti Vietnam & Laos is jan, was going to go by myself but my mate has decided to come along...hostels are the way forward & best place to meet people. Chris, did you stay in some futon bedded places in Japan??
I didn't even call anyone while I was away, so no-one would have had a clue if anything had happened until I was due back home. It probably makes you take a bit more care of yourself rather than rely on anyone else.
i wouldnt enjoy a week away on me own i dont think, im not exactly an entusiastic outgoing individual so id get bored canny easily after sight seeing, i like a good relaxing drink with me mates and i never go socialising on my own. i think half the pleasure of sight seeing is when your with ya bird as sappy as it sounds. i just dont think i could be arsed to spend all that money on a holiday on me own
I couldn't go somewhere on my own like. I couldn't even go to the pub on me own let alone another country.
You get to meet and socialise with people you normally wouldn't. I would recommend it to anyone! Brazil was How much you looking to spend Jim?
it is amazing isn't it...no one even questions why you are by yourself & you can just mix on in
I'd get a Inter-Rail pass mate. Travel around Eurpe for peanuts. You can be in a different country and city every day with one of these bad boys!
Very true! Gave me confidence too. I felt liberated, being able to survive half way round the world on my own. I didnt have reception on my phone for days at a time either, which was strange not having contact. My mam musta been neurotic lol. Its not everyones cup of tea like. Id go on my won again tho, no worries
