To throw my 2p in, I think trance is perhaps the most natural entry point into dance music, for want of a better analogy. It's the most recognisable style. Youngsters perhaps start there, develop & refine their tastes and only then digress into other genres.

Dance music wise I listened to hardhouse first, I think its all boring and 'samey' nowadays so I dont like it as much. I dont mind going to hardhouse nights because the atmosphere is class but the only hard music I listen to at home is Uberdruck.
