Because the Normandy beach landings were a result of carefully planned and articulated warfare on two opposing sides, that and time degrades peoples peoples conscience towards such events, which is only natural. Conversely 9//11 happened 6 years ago, was an ostensibly unprovoked attack in which thousands of people were inncoently massacred in the most hellish of circumstances in the space of a few hours without any prior notion that such an event would occur. Comparing the two is ridiculous on so many levels.
The comparison is relevant because we are talking about video games and there have been many featuring the 2nd world war over the past decade. I am however aware that the two events are totally different which is why I then mentioned Shock and Awe as a closer example of the hipocracy in these decisions. Shock and Awe, which happened four years ago, was an ostensibly unprovoked attack in which thousands of people were innocently massacred in the most hellish of circumstances in the space of a few hours. PS, I had to google ostensibly.
With that logic in mind, I assume you wouldn't see a problem with Rockstar or other developing a game in which you play a Nazi officer at a concentration camp where you get to machine gun a room full of Jews or rape a few gypsy boys? War is a part of our history and a part of life, in these games you are following a structured set of rules and missions that are usually historically accurate to some degree. GTA enables you smash a plane into the side of a building at will. I'm not saying I have any problem with it, but what I am saying is I can perfectly understand the concerns of the governers of NYC. Your comparison is pretty shaky though considering EA brought Desert Strike about 15 years ago in the middle of the Gulf War..
Would I see a problem with it? It's not something I would buy and I may also decide to not buy other products by its publisher but I don't think that it should be illegal. People would vote with their feet if such a game was put out, it would be commercial suicide. Do you think that Return to Castle Wolfenstein should have been censored world wide as it was in Germany because it features Nazi themes? But should their concerns lead to this sort of censorship by politicians? It seems like a slippery slope to me. That supports my point that the censorship is one sided doesn't it?
i think it's pretty shit that they've probably HAD to censor it due to the overly sensitive current climate. I was also reading in the the sunday times* yesterday about censors are going to crack down on violent movies, stuff that features scene of horror torture, like hotel 2 thats coming out and saw4 - as well as the new 'grindhouse' flick - they coming back to the ' it corrupts young minds' arguement - they didn't offer any facts to back it up though. The censors are going to cut films. i think thats shocking - once again, people not taking responsibility for their own actions but it's easier to blame someone/something else - in this case, a movie they watched. pathetic *blatant "look at me, i'm geet clever" type plug..
