Basically Brunel revolutionised the way we build boats/ bridges and redesigned the modern railway system, which we still use today.

    He also did these:

1826 7 August Thames Tunnel works under the direction of Brunel

1831 31 March Brunel appointed Engineer to Clifton Bridge

1833 7 March Brunel appointed Engineer to Great Western Railway

1837 19 July PS Great Western launched

1838 4 June First section of GWR opened

1841 30 June GWR completed between London and Bristol

1842 1 July First section of Bristol & Exeter Railway opened

1843 25 March Thames Tunnel opened

19 July SS Great Britain launched

1847 13 September First atmospheric trains run between Exeter and Teignmouth

1854 16 January Paddington New Station opened

1858 31 January PSS Great Eastern launched

1859 11 April Royal Albert Bridge, Saltash, completed

    15 September Brunel dies

1864 8 December Clifton Bridge opened

So in 38yrs he single handidly redesigned the rail system in britian built revolutionary bridges that are still in use today and not to mention all the works he did designing new super sized liners.

Although darwin was a genius (IMHO) I believe that brunel should be voted no 1.

'tis quite obviously darwin.. he practically gave us an entire branch of science?!?

he gave us his theory of evolution, and most importantly of all he lends his name to the "darwin" awards.. quite simply the best awards ever given out :p

Well-argued, and as Smartie pointed out, you voted for him before the prog last night :) Brunel was a well-hard genius.

I noticed that after the prog, lots of women had voted for Brunel. I also noticed that Brunel was a handsome fella. Does this mean that women are impressed by a man who can produce enormous erections, or are they just air-heads who will vote for anyone who looks good?

Was also pretty funny when Clarkson dissed Di at the end too!

Brunel shouldn't be voted number 1 cos he built railways, bridges tunnels n ships... Loads of people have done just look at the modern day virgin... He should be voted number 1 cos he was one of the biggest contributers to the industrial revolution.... He's the obvious representation of the biggest thing ever to happen to mankind...

Darwin may of told us we come from monkeys.... But Brunel helped make the world what it is today...

He maybe wasn't the cleverest briton (although he'd have a very good shot at it) but he was certainly the greatest and without a doubt done the most for this country.

But on the same kinda line newton is the father of modern physics. The rules that he set out not only define every structure ever build but he also gave us the law of universal gravitation which explains why the solar system moves like it does.

The he was the first person to firgure out how the colours of the raindow work and with out this we would not have laser or infrared beams.

And without his theorys the world would not be as it is today.

And he done all this nearly 300yrs ago!!!

Actually i wanna change my mind to Newton

    no. ov course not.
ill tell you lot how evolution works by explaning it with my made up creature, the fraggleantipus.

the fraggleantipus was a small creature, fat with short arms. it lived in colleges and universities. at night, when all the humans had gone home, it used to eat the striplights from the celing, but because it had short arms it had a job to reach them. One day, in a family of fraggleantipus's a baby fraggleantipus was born with really long arms. when it was old enough to eat striplights it could reach them easier than the rest of the fraggleantipus's. this made the little one grow big and strong and much healthier than everyone else. he had more enery to shag the other fraggleantipus's so had a few children, his children too had long arms and so a new generation of stronger healthier fraggleantipusses were raised. that is evolution, we evole to adapt to our surroundings and our life styles better. think of stereotypical fat americans, they have adapted to be lazy things with a huge capacity to store fat lol

please someone tell me i did well explaining it, ive writter "fraggleantipus" so many times it hurts.

you did very well dear, fraggleantipus is a terribly long word!

So evolution can't go back, but it can just pause.... Does this mean that our fat cousins would starve (slowly) if we removed fast-food as they are too fat to hunt n shit?

    Let's bomb McDonalds!*

I've got this plan... We hate americans, so do the Canadians (i've asked them) and prob so do the Chinese, and there's fucking millions of them, and so do the arabs (obviously), Mexicans REALLY hate them! Now America is a fucked up country full of fucked up fat people, and I've checked with the Canadians, I'm sure the rest would be happy with this, so why don't we all...

    Invade America!

We'd kick the shit out of them! Mexicans from the south, Candians from the North, Chinese could just dig upwards, us in charge (obvioulsy) Arabs can do what they want. All those Kung-Fu ninja chinese warriors, Jeff'd love it, you can be in charge of them mate! Then tell them to stop being so stupid and ugly, but keep making computers n shit, and good telly, but I'm sick of Frasier now thank you :)

All the Canadians want in return is that we invade France after, and I for one am gagging for an excuse. They've been asking for it for years. Get a wash, you all ming! how can you be great luvvers when you hum? Imagine thier crotches, ewwww! And as for all being cordon bleu chefs, I wouldn't let them prepare a meal for a dog, not with those fingernails.

We're gonna need some £££ but I also have a plan for robbing a bank (Gizmo) involving a mobile fone, an ambulance and sewers. I've got the plans (really!) so who's in? All I need now is the ambulance...

*If there are any nice police ppl look at this, I'M JOKING!!!

    Well done lucy! :D

What about George Stevenson? He did a lot of crazy shit to do with railways. Was it not him who invented the steam engine? And did he not build the high level bridge to get his train over the water? Is that bridge still there? Will it ever become unsafe? The answer is it wont. One part of the structure has already started to fail but instead of only building one set of supporrts he built two. It is also held up by chains underneath it which travel about a mile into the ground either side of the bridge. This guy was the boyo in my opinion. Plus he's a geordie. :D
