Rain wipes out 'baby Glastonbury' as flash floods hit Somerset

    Philippe Naughton

The South West's first big music festival of the season has been wiped out by heavy rain and flash flooding that left thousands of eco-conscious hippies stranded in a water-logged field in Somerset.

Avon and Somerset police called time on the Sunrise Festival last night after a sudden and heavy burst of rain between 6.30pm and 7pm that left hundreds of homes in the area with flood damage.

Although the flooding began to subside quickly, further showers were predicted for today, and the festival site at Bearly Inn farm, near Yeovil, was under water.

"It's a mudbath, reminiscent of Glastonbury," a police spokesman said. "Which reminds me - we've still got that to come."

Some 20,000 people had been expected to attend the Sunrise Festival, for a music line-up including the ambient legends The Orb and electro-pioneers System 7. The festival describes itself as 100-per cent sustainable - its main stage is in a solar-powered big top - and it has been voted the most eco-friendly of Britain's 450 music festivals.

The Sunrise event, only in its third year, has also been compared by Michael Eavis, founder of the rain-plagued Glastonbury event, with his own festival in its infancy.

Police said that around 5,000 fans had already arrived at the Sunrise Festival by the time it was called off.

At the peak of the storm, the Devon and Somerset Fire Brigade was taking calls “every few seconds” from worried residents, with more than 350 emergency calls received in just two and a half hours.

More than half a dozen cars were abandoned after getting stuck in waterlogged roads across the region. Four people were rescued by firefighters when their car was stuck in a flood near Langford Bridge near Honiton. There are no reports of anyone injured because of the floods.

The Royal Bath & West Showground, at Shepton Mallett, was severely hit with visitors stuck in the mud as they tried to leave. A police spokesman said that an RAF helicopter was to have been sent in to pluck show-goers from their roofs of their cars but in the end police and firefighters were able to remove everyone safely.

There was intermittent rain through the region overnight but no reports of any more floods yet. A spokeswoman for MeteoGroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association, said that while some localised flooding could affect South West England today it was not expected to be serious.

Andy Newland, a spokesman for the Devon and Somerset Fire Service, said that last night’s floods were different to those that caused havoc across southern and central England last summer.

He said: “It was a typical flash flood gone almost as soon as quickly as it came. It has quietened down considerably overnight.

“It’s very different from what happened in Gloucestershire because that built up for many days. This was literally that a tremendous amount of water came down with very little warning and the surface water drainage couldn’t handle it.”

Crewkerne, Ilminster, Shepton Mallett and Wells were most severely affected, Mr Newland said, with everywhere from Bridgewater in the north to Crewkerne in the south hit by the rain.

Laura Gilchrist, forecaster for MeteoGroup, said that around 11.8mm of rain had fallen over the Yeovil station in three hours.

She said: “This doesn’t sound like a lot, but the brief nature has caused problems. It’s an area of thundery rain that’s moved up over the channel from France, moving across the south west of the country.

"In terms of rainfall, it’s not unusual for the area at this time of year. The sun should be shining this morning, which will help it dry out and there will be showers throughout the day, so we are not ruling out localised flooding, but we’re not expecting serious problems.”

Just checked seetickets and our tickets have been dispatched so hopefully get them soon :)

I won't be down there till Thursday morning as I'm working all day on the Wednesday at my works Awards event. Driving down at 11. The Mrs is going down with a couple of mates on Wednesday though so should have a good camping spot sorted.

Found my Glasto hints & tips:

DO - take plenty of toilet roll, what you don't use you'll be able to sell.

    DON'T - Forget your toothbrush

DO - Tie something to the aerial of you car so you can find it under all the mud on monday.

DON'T - Pitch your tent with the doors facing uphill, if the streams start flowng downhill your tent will fill up. Or near scousers. or the toilets for that matter.

DO - Have a good shave or wax before you go.

DO - Take a nice lurve rug for cosying up in the stone circle with strangers on a night time.

DON'T - Love thy neighbour too much, they may do you over!

DO - Remain optimistic about the weather

DON'T - Padlock your tent shut, you might lose the key....or worse still be trapped inside when i passer by flicks a tab your way...WHOOOSH!

DO - make sure your at stone circle on sunday night when the who have finished (obviously this was for last year)

DON'T - Roll around in the mud (if there is any) you'll only regret it when you eventually come down!

DON'T - go in the toilet everyone else is avoiding

DO - Love it like it's your last, you might not get a ticket next year (obviously i'm no fortune teller since it hasn't sold out yet!)

DO - Get married in lostvagueness church (if you haven't already it's too late cos it's not there this year)

DON'T - Try to collate a list like this in the state i am in right now. (all wrote back to front and upside down)

DON'T - forget your way around, you'll spend hours just trying to find your way back and miss out on shit loads.

DO - take as much stuff as you like you can always leave it in the car (not aimed at the demons who take public transport)

DO - Rub shampoo in your hair, if it rans you'll have mobile cleaning.

DON'T - go too fast, theres plenty of time!

DO - try real sommerset cider

DON'T - Lose your marbles, or your phone, or your wallet for that matter.

    DO - prepare for snow!

    DON'T - take any valuables

DO - take travellers cheques, the que for the cashpoint is a beauty!

DON'T - let the rain dampen your spirits!

    Voila!!!!

Just got back from Glastonbury an hour ago .... got work tomorrow and couldnt do three days in a row so i didnt do the last day ;)

.... really good fun! Absolutely and totally mental the amount of people packed into that valley. And its bloody massive as well.

Theres something for absolutlely everyone there - everything from mainstream bands and donner meat and chips .... through to cabaret, circus tents and blacksmith workshops.

Made the monumental mistake of getting battered on friday night meaning all of yesterday was spent in a comedown stupor made much worse by kicking off the drinking at 8am with a glass of wine.

The stench from the toilets was disgusting, and i managed to get away with only going for a slash about 5 times - I think i managed to successfully convince my bowels not to empty by sheer mental control alone, and i never needed to put myself through the indignity of having a dump over the pits of hell.

Saw James Zabelia who was class, Nick Warren, Nicky Holloway and Trevor Fung, The Hoosiers, Massive Attack, The Ting Tings (from a distance), Hot Chip and a ton of people i've never seen or heard of in the Glade tent which was where i spent most of my time.

.... wasnt going ANYWHERE near the Pyramid main stage which was just absolute bedlam - I'll watch the highlights on TV ;)

It was mud city on friday, but it never rained a single drop on saturday and everyone spent the day in proper 'festival mode', all sitting on the ground and chilling out.

Oh, and you couldnt go more than 20 foot without smelling green in the air :D

Roll on glade festival next month ... its nearby so i look forward to nipping home for a shower and a dump half way through!

The thursday was a bit of a downer as it rained a bit but as soon as the music started was amazing. Saw loads of bands can't be bothered to name them all...loved seeing fatboy slim and lilly allen do a special guest appearence with mark ronson  . And the verve were amazing. Can't explain how good the atmosphere was. Need to go next year, The toilets were
