It would take me a little while to do the second one - it's been 20 years since I sat my O levels - but I could do it.

    I'd be quite worried if I couldn't - I did Maths A level too.

I definitely couldn't do Maths A level now. I could give the GCSE a good go though.

i could barely do maths A-level then! :p

btw i'm not commenting on if exams are easier/harder now, just pointing out that the people who said it was easy to get an A* cos you only need 48% were talking shit cos you haven't seen the exam paper so can't comment at all!

but i got 48% on one of my exams this year and failed it! :(

Not everyone in the higher paper is doing it because they're expected to get an A*. It's based on someones ability to get a C. If the teacher thinks that person is capable then they are entered into the higher paper. It works both ways. Again, look at how many people come out with straight A*'s and think about your comment about people being retards.

edit: I know you said it's the last time you're pointing it out etc so I'll leave it at this. :) However, if your statement is correct then so is that of someone claiming that the majority of people in the country are retards.

THis is what i'm trying to point out. 48% in a normal exam is a shocking performance (sorry). At A Level that would be an E. If you've been taught higher Maths for the two years leading up to the GCSE exam, there's no reason why you shouldn't get over 60% imo.

this is what i'm trying to point out... unless you know the contents of the exam then you cannot comment on a % mark as being good/bad/shocking...

i've done exams where less than 90% is a fail, but also others where anything above 50% is a good mark (not just a pass).

YOU CANNOT JUST SAY ABOVE A CERTAIN AMOUNT IS GOOD/BAD! :p

Nah I'm not, sorry. I've just sat exams, and I would've been absolutely distraught if I'd got 48% in any of them, regardless of how difficult it is.

As I said, it's relative to what you're taught. If I'd sat a higher Maths GCSE paper after being taught intermediate stuff, 48% might be an alright result, but I stick by the fact that if you've been taught the stuff you're being tested on for two years, and you revise it properly, you should be getting way over 60%.

No actually, I did shite (ABCC)

At least I'm disappointed in myself though, and still didn't get less than 60% in any exams (a few 95%, not one 100% this time :( ).

Cheers. I was well disappointed with it to be honest, it was well below what I was predicted and what I've been averaging thus far (AAAABC in January). Still, got me into a Russel Group university, which numbs the pain a little...

out of interest do you know what percents you got in yours? or just the grades?

    Here
Things change when you get to Uni as well, i would've been quite gutted in school if I got below 60 but I was generally quite chuffed with something over 60 at Uni as it was classed as a decent grade :)

I wasn't predicted 6, I only sat four (predicted AAAB). The AAAABC thing were the modular results I got in my last exams, in January.

I know percentages in the separate modules, and grades overall. I could work out the percentages overall though, as I know my individual marks. The grade boundaries are 80% A, 70% B, 60% C, though. And those were high Cs (ten marks of a fucking B in Chemistry, bastards).

To be fair, I would've called myself a complete retard if I'd scored 48% in any of those, mind.

Well yes, alright, it probably does get more difficult at university, and I know boundaries change and what's considered a good result changes (isn't it similar to A Level though, in that 80% is a first, 70% 2:1, etc?). However we're talking about GCSEs here, let's not forget...
