i don't have a problem with the tax i pay on my wages - it's a necessary evil - i hate the stealth taxes on essentials that they KNOW we as consumers buy - i.e. 80% on petrol, the same on cigs and booze

I would question whether these three are essentials though. Food, clothing, energy etc are, but not petrol, cigs and booze.

agreed look at somwhere like switzerland they have a higher standard of living than us and they have (not on evrything ) much higher taxes than we do !

However they have moved there wage scale up to at least alow people to live comfortably .

Higher taxes are needed but we have to look at a compromise on wages as well . part of the reason the minimum wage was introduced was so taxes could increase so why not move it up again ! :D

petrol in this country is a fucking rip off, as are fags and booze. any trip to the continent will tell you this. the whole of europe is also facing an oil shortage but you don't see the french, italians or spanish paying a £1 a litre, the goverment has been looking for excuses to hike up the price of fuel since the last gen elec. and now they have something... even though it's been going up 1-2p a month anyway.
one thing that does piss me off is that many other euro countries pay they're road tax within the price of thier petrol, and its still cheaper than ours... wtf is that all about!!
we have the second or third highest taxes in europe, behind norway and someone else i think, and anyone who thinks this goes to the nhs and so forth can think again, our nhs is shite, and standards are constantly falling, fair enough its probs better than america and most third world countries but compared to most of the eu, were a fucking laughing stock! question is... were do all the taxes go???

p.s am a taxi driver and am gutted with rising petrol prices! :(

if you cant afford the petrol in your car, get a more fuel economical car.

ive just tanked up the impreza and it cost me £45, was strange seeing the litres go up the same speed as the cost.

will be knocking of early tonight to go and do sum donuts down silverlink

if they do protests, i will either get the metro in to work, or take the fuel out the scooby and ride the minimoto into work

The thing is, we're British. We just accept this sort of thing.

I'm amazed USSR patriot hasn't wrote a 2000 word reply on this, he thinks petrol should be a hell of a lot more expensive.

I remember once he proclaimed that inheritance tax should be 100%

    Anyway, i digress...

Every system here is better than the Americans, taxation does obviously work to good effect. It's nice to know that if you get injured, you will get proper care and it wont cost you £10k....operations etc etc, all come from tax.

But, those who claim that all taxes go to good use is horse shit, I wonder how much is going on Iraq operations etc etc

Putting up petrol at this rate is an absolute disgrace though, and the government will probably get away with it. People can cause major disruption, but in the long run it wont solve anything, petrol will still go up.

I think if it was say dropped and frozen at 80p a litre, while thats still damn expensive, it would make a massive difference to peoples attitudes and they would still make a horendous amount of money from tax.
