I never argue these days, because it's pointless - you'll find it much more effective to be empathic, tell them how sorry you are that they're upset (so you're not apologising for anything, really), and that you understand that they're angry.

They'll find it impossible to be angry with you if you're not disagreeing with them, and you can calm the situation down (if you're a little skillful with it) and walk away leaving them feeling vented, but having had to give up nothing on your part, and able to take credit for being such a good listener

You will then have the upper hand in the relationship till the next argument.
