initiative like that is the result of an older brother playing him rave anthems at 4 in the morning when he came in from clubbing in 1991

Yea tuned into Wear FM when i was a kid listening to tunes like moog eruption, running out of time, charly, and so many other rave anthems whilst older brother was out getting mashed at the old rezerection gigs. Bringing in old mix tapes of carl cox and passing them onto me....what was this music...where did it come from !

Got a few like that where I've sorta reconstructed the track using bits from originals or other remixes. An recent example is a track I played at Sea called "Yerba Del Diablo" by Datura back from 1992. Still sounds as fresh today as it did back then. I had an original mix (all battered and crackly) and another remix with a better intro. I cleaned up the track removing the pops and clicks then spliced the two together.
Just need to pick out the peaks and trophs in the track.
I should of been a sound engineer instead of a systems analyst really...

Not at all, but how else can you get to play a good track if you can't get your hands on a copy as a vinyl or a download from somewhere like beatport, juno or djdownload.
I don't buy half as many vinyls as I used to...purely down to things like postage costs and waiting times when buying online. digital downloads are so much quicker and easier and less hassle. I bought a set of CDJ's about two years ago and they stood around for a few months with me scratching my head wondering why i'd just spent the best part of 1200 quid . I still love the feel and deep bass you get from a vinyl, nothing beats it but the mp3 generation has taken over which is a real shame.:( I wouldn't ever get rid of my 1210's or my record collection... they're a part of history. The amount of vinyls is in 4 figures and they take up a lot of room but it's so easy to grab a track at hand off the shelf in my room and have an impromptu mixing session.
    Long live the 12inch vinyl!

You can always get a copy

    more people should use www.discogs.com

What do you think people did before MP3's

I'm completely going against what i would have said 12 months ago here, but i reckon digital downloads have taken away the novelty and value of music.

Selling my CDJ's has made me appreciate music much more and also raised the quality of the tracks I buy. When tracks are so cheap, it doesnt matter if you buy a few shit ones but when you're paying £6 a record, you make sure you are getting good stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I still buy downloads to fill the gaps but vinyl is definitely what I want to buy

that would be funny as fook but the is a reason why hardly anyone gets his re edits like he dosnt want them to have them simple as.

he doesnt release many of his re edits tho.

You're right, it is a good track, but the reason that you cannot get it is because Paul has made it purely for his own sets. He does it loads and they rarely get released, and that is what makes his sets unique.

No offence mate but what is the point really of doing that? You can never play it out anywhere, and if you are so good at sound engineering then make your own re-edit??

Firstly the quality isnt going to be very good, as no set rip is really going to be anywhere near 320 kps and at best possibly not even 192, so will probably shoud shite played out.

Secondly it is illegal as you are playing the track without permission of the artist, as mentioned above his re-edits are something that he does only for his own sets, not for anyone with a copy of soundforge and soulseek to edit and play out.

I'm registered on discogs and have been for a long time.
I agree that tunes are always available - whether its from
online shops or other fellow dj's / people / ebay or whatever.
It just takes time to find what you're after and there's plenty
of online vinyl stores from foreign countries that I've used
over the years...even as far as australia.. vinylwarning.com.au
    A class record store!

The net is a great resource for new music downloads but I
totally agree with Phil about mp3's taking the novelty out of music.
I used to love the whole buying records thing and rattling through
the shelves in record shops for hours on end.

I always remember the day I picked up a copy of Dark
& Long by Underworld in pristine condition on 12".
At the end of the day a lot of the vinyls in my collection
are worth a small fortune. It's not as if any CD with some
black marker scribbled on the top is going to make any
money should I ever even think about selling my music
collection in the future (which of course I'm not)

I did 5 years in a commercial club but got to play full on trance
most weekends for 4 hours a night and used to cart about two
full record boxes every friday & saturday which almost
killed me to be fair. Even did an ibiza stlye season with a live
bongo player mic'd up in the dj booth every friday....but yea
I can understand why so many people have converted to CD
dj'ing for the weight reasons but I would also say I prefer vinyl.
The deep bass you get from a 12" at 33rpm is better than any
    digital copy for me...

I only started using CD's near the end of my time since there
was a lot of new commercial tunes that I refused to buy on vinyl.
The CDJ's have been a welcome addition to my studio since the
digital format is so accessible for getting tunes instantly and
    not waiting for postage etc.

In response to graham...yea fair enough the tune might be pressed
exclusively just for the artist himself and maybe it's
illegal to play it out... but what about all those white 12's people
have in their collections... camisra vs. lizard, bootleg horns, to
name just two - i've got loads! are they not illegal too?
I do write my own material and have been for years since
I had two Amiga's linked together with a copy of Octamed.
I'll post some stuff online and ask for opinions maybe...
It's Cubase and some Access outboard gear now

Also, no digital track is ever perfect and the whole 192kbps,
and 320kbps is a bit pointless. You could have a track resampled
at 22'000 or 11'000 Hz then saved as a 320kbps file and it will
still sound awful... (Hz = thousands of samples per second)
There's literally no point in saving files using anything
past 128kbps since they're quite often referred to as being
'cd transparent audio' - The whole point with an Mp3 is the
trade off between compression & quality and there's much better
formats out there for storing files, like the Ogg format as an
example - I could continue to bore the hell out of everyone
with details about the human audio spectrum and how you can't
hear anything past 22'100 Hz and all that nerdy stuff....but I wont....
    for now.... :)

Im not exactly clued up with regards to the science of sound, but i have good ears and there is a massive difference between 128 and 320 mp3's. Just like there is a huge difference between 320 files and WAV's.

look you should all shut the f*** up

static is and will continue to be abetter dj than 99% of the dj who spout utter gash on this and other boards

he has been spending a small fortune on records since the age of 8 . I should know cos I used to have to often loan him money so he could buy them before he worked

the only time he would go after a ripped copy is if it had proved impossible to get hold of himself

at least he gets out there, goes and supports nights he wants to play at and doesnt bumm promoters or buy his way into local organsisations to get sets

theres only maybe 2 -3 local djs who have played at detox whohave played as well as him

    chris littlewood - castle 06 , kai foyen castle 05, smurf - boat 04

quick you have done more downloading than owt else and i hold you responsible for the death of vinyl and the closure of air records
