    well thats an absolute load of crap, it's standard policy to send the old one back with the corner cut off and therefore is not illegal in those circumstances.

    Yes thank you. Does being the third person to point it out in any way detract from the warm glow you're experiencing at showing the message board how clever you are?

    I flew on Easyjet with an out-of-date passport a couple of years back, but i was only going to Bristol.

    Apparently they are still valid as a form of photo id for a certain period (cant remember how long).

    Seeing as you enjoy it so much, 'it is illegal to buy alcohol on Christmas day'.

    That one's for free.

    I thought you were supposed to have 6 months left to run on your passport to be able to travel :spangled: I may have just imagined that though

    You are advised to have 6 months remaining but I don't know how rigorously this is enforced. The reason for the 6 month limit is that for most countries (including the UK), the limit for a visit visa (if required) is usually 6 months. Some countries (Egypt for example) require you to complete and sign an immigration card including a declaration that you will not stay beyond 6 months before you are allowed through immigration control. If you attempt to return and your passport has expired, you run the risk of being refused entry clearance to your country of origin. This is why it is sometimes time consuming to remove failed asylum seekers/overstayers with no passport etc as the receiving countries will prevent return without valid documentation.

    Re: Other forms of ID - You do not need to have a passport if you are a citizen of one of the following countries and intent to visit another listed below;

    Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden plus Iceland and Norway (which are not EU members).

    The UK & Ireland are NOT part of the 1985 Schengen Agreement, therefore a passport is required to visit the above noted countries. However, there is an agreement between the UK and Ireland that a passport is not required for travel between the two countries and valid other governmental ID (driving license etc) will suffice; this is at the discretion of the carrier (airline, ferry etc) so it is best to check with them prior to travel.

    Hope you manage to get sorted anyway... :)

    My mate was trying to go to Ibiza last minute a few weeks back but his mate couldn't find his passport. Went along to the passport office and they said there was absolutely no chance he was getting one unless he had his old passport.

    Got to be honest. Anyone who doesn't prepare for their holiday until 24hrs before deserves what they get.
