Whether you agree with the proposition or not, this is the interesting bit:

Riding bikes is potentially harmful, but did we stop doing that? No, we invented the bike helmet. So the question begs to be asked: When are we going to invent a pill helmet?

LSD's the next report? tbh - i regard it as a 'more danngerous' substance on society for the unpredictability of it - you gotta love acid tho

Regardless of James's and Melt's radical opinions on the state of play on decent Did's, i can't really take it seriously enough because of course their going to stick up for that period of there life because it is there 'hayday'

we, the kids, have not had the benefit of the oldskool rave/acid/tony wilson effect so we have no comparison to draw on the subject. this present time is my hayday - so more than enough MDMA crystal and pink champagne will get me back to 1992 without even having to be 6.

Live with it. times change.

all this talk of age reminds me of standing at the back of the royal highland center talking to someone about the state of the raves these days.

i remember him going on telling me the pills wernt as good as they had been, but i was quite bongo'd myself. he also went on about how them letting in all the kids was killing the vibe off cos they didnt understand the way things went on.

so me and this lad who was about 20 talked for about 15 minutes (or so it felt like) getting on well (for being complete strangers), when he suddenly asks me 'how old are you anyway like mate?' i told him i was 15 and he just walked off in disgust.

the politics of dancin' eh?

Read blue light you will learn alot if your interested. If not your right just get on with it and have a good time.

It obvious though that something costing £15 is going to be better than a 60p benwell cowie.

But its more interesting the goverment is not even willing to talk about E still after 20 years even though evidence points to moderate use not being that bad for you.

Except the danger of becoming rave bores like me and melt and having a large record collection and loads of random phone numbers in old mobile phones.

Drug experts will turn their attention to downgrading the psychedelic drug LSD after suffering a humiliating snub yesterday over proposals for a softer line on the drug Ecstasy.

Ministers rejected a recommendation from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs' that Ecstasy should be lowered from Class A to B.

A second proposal to give out kits enabling users to test their tablets in advance for purity and strength was also thrown out by the Home Office.

Mary Brett, of Europe Against Drugs, said: 'LSD is very dangerous and unpredictable.

'It is almost like a game the ACMD is playing, but it is too serious for that. We are talking about children's lives and futures.'

The Home Office also made it plain that it was opposed to downgrading LSD, placing Home Secretary Jacqui Smith in conflict with Professor Nutt.

A spokesman said: 'The Government has no intention of reclassifying LSD. LSD has very random, and sometimes very frightening, effects.'

The move came as figures showed the number of ten to 16-year- olds convicted of drug offences has jumped by 149 per cent since Labour came to power.

In 2007, 3,019 children were convicted of drug offences - up from 1,212 in 1998.

Shadow Justice Secretary, Dominic Grieve said: 'It is a direct consequence of ministers' mixed messages on dangerous drugs, which are betraying a whole generation.'

The ACMD's report on Ecstasy, which kills around 17 people every year, was published yesterday, but its findings were instantly rejected by Miss Smith, who also rebuked Professor Nutt earlier this week for suggesting that taking the drug was no more dangerous than horseriding.

Government criticised over refusal to downgrade ecstasy

The home secretary, Jacqui Smith, was today accused by her most senior expert drugs adviser of making a political decision in rejecting the scientific advice to downgrade ecstasy from a class A drug.

Professsor David Nutt said he was handed a Home Office letter rejecting two of the key recommendations of the advisory council on the misuse of drugs (ACMD) report on ecstasy, just before it was officially published at lunchtime today.

The report, based on a 12-month study of 4,000 academic papers, says that ecstasy use poses a significant public health issue in Britain, with up to 5m tablets taken every month.

But the ACMD says that it is nowhere near as dangerous as other class A drugs such as heroin and crack cocaine, and should be downgraded to class B alongside amphetamines and cannabis.

Nutt said the second rejection of a key finding from the government's drug experts – last year they were also over-ruled on cannabis – would not lead to the advisers giving up. Indeed the council of 31 drug experts are now to press ahead with a new review of LSD and other psychedelics.

The Home Office minister Alan Campbell wrote to Nutt, telling him that the government did not dispute the council's scientific findings but was "not prepared to send a message to young people that we take ecstasy less seriously".

Campbell added that although ecstasy had been in use for 20 years, harmful long-term effects could not be "ruled out"

Nutt responded: "Our job is not to send messages to the public but to advise the home secretary and the prime minister on the relative harms of drugs. I suspect they accepted our evidence but I think they have made a political decision not to reclassify."

The government also rejected a second recommendation from the experts to look at a Dutch-style national drug testing scheme for the purity of ecstasy tablets in circulation, saying it would leave Britain open to claims it was breaking its international obligations.

Ecstasy was listed as a class A illegal drug in 1977 alongside LSD and other psychedelics. The latest British Crime Survey evidence shows it is used by about a third of a million people each year, 270,000 of them aged 16 to 24, and is the third most popular illicit drug in Britain.

The ACMD report says that there are few adverse physical and mental health effects. Some experience a small decline in verbal memory, anxiety attacks and occasional seizures. Although there were "several thousand" hospital admissions a year related to the drug and it was implicated in 30 deaths a year, this did not compare with the 600-a-year heroin deaths or cocaine-related deaths, which have risen to 86 a year.

According to Nutt, a Scottish study suggests that one reason for ecstasy's "peculiarly prominent place" within the media dates back to the 1990s, when every single ecstasy-related death was covered in detailed by the Scottish press while far fewer other drug-related deaths were reported.

The mental health effects are said to be relatively few in both the short and long term, with few people becoming dependent. The ACMD also concludes that those who take ecstasy are not commonly seen to become violent or engage in behaviour that leads to public order offences.

The experts did, however, say that further research was needed on the effects of ecstasy on the brain, the nature and extent of its use among under-16s, and on public attitudes and the relative risks of ecstasy in relation to other drugs.
