Just finished watching this...... fucking hell what a good film, definately one of the best this year by a massive margin. the release i got came with the SRT for the subs which just subs the aliens. and he doesent look like a christopher to me
All sorts of clever things in the film. I reckon that the aliens having human names is a reference to the Cape Coloureds in South Africa being assigned Afrikaans names (and possibly black slaves being given British names) - District 9 is actually in Cape Town where Cape Coloureds originate from so it makes sense. They are sort of seen as neither black nor white so get a lot of shit from everyone just like the Prawns.
Really really enjoyed this. a good combination of thought provoking and massive guns and violence- nice to see a really good film with no massive star in it as well, makes it a bit more real
I thought it was a fucking comedy at the begining when the blacks where saying "They can go home we dont want them here, they eat our food and take our money" "It would be ok if they where from another country but they arnt even from this world" (this bit must have been the small print) The main actor Jason Cope is fucking unreal, what a performace from a cringy geek to a total anti hero that you feel for. Now thats acting.
the main actor isnt Jason Cope, it's Sharlto Copley. he's the one that play's Wikus. it's his debut in a big title like this and i think he's done fucking class job, if he can change his accent he will probably go far in hollywood - it's nice to see anyone other than LA getting a decent look in the market
i didnt like this film at all, i seen it at the pictures last neet and it was too long and crap. and listing to a south african swearing altho very funny wasnt my cup of tea
Am sorry, have I seen the same film as you guys ???? This was the worst film i've seen, the opening is commical, the fact they call them prawns and eat cat food!! I thought it was going to be a bit black comedy, but nah !! Absolute pile !!
Watched it last night, thought it was fantastic. And as said before the bloke who played Wikus van der Merwe is tremendous.
I'm watching this now, looks good so far like. Was this a south african made film, or just randomly set in SA ?
whey, the budgets fucking astounding, hollywood produced - but it's very deeply political. knowing a bit about the politics of SA and Apartheid's useful, and even if you read the first paragraph on wiki you sort of go 'ahhhhh righttt' [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Africa_under_apartheid"]South Africa under apartheid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Flag_of_South_Africa.svg" class="image"><img alt="Flag of South Africa.svg" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/af/Flag_of_South_Africa.svg/100px-Flag_of_South_Africa.svg.png"@@AMEPARAM@@commons/thumb/a/af/Flag_of_South_Africa.svg/100px-Flag_of_South_Africa.svg.png[/ame] However it's getting slammed right left and centre. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/a178244/nigerian-official-slams-district-9.html?imdb http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8264180.stm http://www.cinematical.com/2009/09/20/surprise-nigerian-government-bans-district-9/ Ha, and looking at some of the news reel on IMDB, Sharto Copley is lined up to play Murdoch in the new A-team film
Went to see this yesterday & thought it was brilliant. From what I read about it I knew it wasnt exactly serious & I thought the comical bits worked really well Cracking film
aye it was a south african flick, mainly sa cast, sa director - think peter jackson just produced it??...... he didnt direct it i know that much lol
