And all the adverts are planned to run at the same time sometimes making it hard to find something to watch while the adverts are on!!!

They (shops that sell TVs) are legally required to pass on the details you give however you are not legally required to give them the correct details. They could refuse to sell a TV to Mickey Mouse but it would be pretty silly as they are not obliged to check the details are correct, simply pass them on as provided by the customer.

I've been playing this game for 2 years with the licensing people, it goes something like this...

They write to me every so often infering that I am commiting a crime.
I phone them up and invite them to come round to see that I am not.
They say they have to come unanounced otherwise I could hide my TV.
I point out that I don't need to hide my TV as I don't need a license to own one.
They say they will not arrange to come to check I am using my TV legally (even thought 30 secs previously they were making out that simply owning one without a license was a crime) and they will turn up when they want.
I point out that unless they make an appointment to visit me when it is convenient they can forget it and that their wish to do so is as good as accusing me of a crime.
They leave me alone for 6 months then start again.

I'm almost starting to enjoy it. :-/

Remember, you do not need a TV license to own a TV, you need a license to watch or record TV signals as they are broadcast.

And finally, the people who turn up have no right of entry unless they have a warrant (which I am told almost never happens).

the point about the BBC is that it's a public service and has editorial independence, it's not in the pay of big business or owned by multi millionaires or press barons. If the licence fee were abolished it would have to become just another broadcaster like all the rest, dependent on advertising and only interested in chasing ratings.
It is astonishingly good value compared to say Sky, with 4 tv channels, 8 radio stations plus all the local ones and a website with iplayer AND a world renowned and trusted newsgathering service. It's one of the few things left that is universally admired about Britain.
I know that it could flog Cilit Bang for loads of dosh but I am so glad there is at least one bit of the culture which is not trying to sell me crap as my price for watching.
If you have ever watched TV in the US then you will know quite how bad things could get. The adverts are longer than the programmes, which are shit, and filled with product placements.
    Rant over

The BBC World Service on medium wave was the only form of decent news I had growing up in Zimbabwe and South Africa - there's no other news source like it, its available anywhere 24 hours a day.

BBC News is on in Australia on their version of Sky, and just about every news report on Australian radio is copied directly from the BBC. On a global scale only the CNN compares to it for TV news. Everywhere I've been, BBC News has been available, And in terms of TV programs, the BBC is quality - again Australian TV just copies straight from the BBC (in between adverts every 5 minutes like America). IMO people should be proud that British TV and radio is so dominant and well respected throughout the world.

I watch BBC4 a bit and listen to Radio 4 most of the day when I'm working. don't watch a lot of tv anyway.
rely on BBC 24 news when stuff happens, use the BBC web site from time to time, and iplayer sometimes for stuff I missed.
For me personally it's the only source of intelligent programming available. I realise a lot of people want to watch endless police camera action and guff like that which is fine but if it wasn't for the BBC there would be no radio for me at all, and not much TV either.
    so yes, I can

when i bought a tv and didnt have a licence i got a letter through the door to say they had been informed i'd bought a tv and please could i get a licence but it was about 1 month after i purchased and no baliff....thats just wrong!

my sister went without a tv licence for about a year and when the tv licence man turned up at her door to tell her off (without a baliff) he entered the house when she was watching countdown, sat down and said "so miss westwood, can i ask have you been watching your television?"

ha ha ha ha silly man, what was that you said "vowel please carol?"

hope your all sorted and settled back down now MOS, got a stress reliever with your name on it at mine.

I never answer the door to anyone unless I am expecting someone, NEVER.

Tell TV licesing to "Fuck off" iv done it twice times in 6 months, once the woman dropped i "we will be back house occupied" letter thru, once I squared up to the little fucker and he smiled and said "pass this to the home owner" and just walked off arsedropped and just three days ago I spotted a white transit with a fat man driving park up outside mine the whole of the back of the van was windowed but had green canvass curtains up, I watched him for few mins cos he looked suss then i seen the curtains in the back start twiching like fuck, then the back side slide doors slammed open, i expected the riot squard to bail out but it was some geek in a tweed jacket with a clip board he headed straight for my door knocked a few times then fucked off, but why would he be sitting in the back of a van when theres two spare seats alongside driver, strange, defo balifs of tv nazis
