thats what annoys me about americans, how they always bang on about 'freedom' and 'liberty' when in actual fact they arent free or liberated at all.

I cant see a problem with most of them. Sure the money you hand over every month could be better managed and spent but a civilisation cant run without every person contributing money to its upkeep? Tax isnt a new thing, never seen Robin Hood?

Thats the kind of post i'd expect from resident communist Forks, not a middle england dwelling Tory like yourself

The only thing tory about me is the idea of low taxation and low government intervention.

Everything else is just the usual bullshit, regardless of party.

You been reading Terrance McKenna? ;)

He may be a dead psychonaut, but I like his theories (even though a lot of stoners use them as an excuse to get wrecked all the time, and thus become "marginalised")

 I love the idea of me as communist. It's like calling Barak Obama a socialist. oh hang on that must make you a Republican.

As for the scrounging charvers and gypos etc..... the acid test is-would you voluntarily change places with them?
If they have it as cushy as you think the answer should be yes.

All this stuff about small government is just the result of 30 years of free market economics propaganda. We all moan about the government wasting money when its spent on 'them' - when YOU lose your job (as a lot of people on here will over the next couple of years) then the talk will be of how shite the benefits are not lets cut them further.

The truth is, and always has been, that the only strength we have is when we come together. The powerful want us all to be single individuals or small family units because that makes us easy to control. The state should merely be the sum of the will of all the individual people in it and just as you would look after your friends and family if they were sick or lost their job or couldn't get an education, the state should do that and more efficiently too.

where it all goes wrong is that the people who run the state machine do it for their own benefit not ours, and look after their own interests first.

we just need a functioning democracy instead of the present elected dictatorship but we will never get it as long as we buy into the myth that we are all individuals with no responsibility to our fellow citizens and that we can't ever change anything

and the lack of freedom thing comes when caring for your fellow citizens tips over into minding their business for them and enforcing your morals on them. This is the defining characteristic of socialist governments and why I am a liberal rather than a socialist or god forbid, a communist.
It's a tragedy for the UK that the Labour party is the opposition rather than the Liberals because both our main parties are totalitarian at heart

If I gave you the opportunity to live on benefits as they really are ( not as the mail or the sun tell you they are) you would run a mile.

we both have the cushy sort of lives that enable us to sit here on a computer yabbing all day whilst having enough spare cash to go clubbing drive a car etc etc

we didn't get into the present mess because we gave all our spare cash to charvers, we gave it to CEO's and fat cat bankers, who are now recipients of more of your money than the chavs could ever dream about.
Wake up look around you, the world is not like they say it is, the enemies are not who they say they are, they just want you to believe that poverty is caused by the poor and thatthe rich (like us) deserve our wealth because we somehow deserve it.
I was lucky enough to be born into a family that cared for me and a state that educated me well and took care of my illnesses and spells of unemployment and with the brains to work the system to my advantage

There is no reason in justice why I should have all this whilst others don't and it's certainly not deserved.

Aye, fuck em - There were glimmers of some good policies in the party conference, although the current financial meltdown has caused them all to sing the same old bullshit lines like canaries - regardless of party.

Cut taxes while not cutting spending? That means one thing .... the next generation completely sold out to pay for the greed of this one.
