Who here has ever been in trouble because of something they did after drinking alcohol? Or who's been a victim?

I personally like to get hammered if I decide to go for a night out (which is much less often than when I was 18.. guess I'm growing out of it). I've only once been arrested, and that was for getting caught randomly with class A's in my pocket. Got a warning for having a piss on the street once too.

Apart from that, I've never been in any sort of trouble. There are ways to behave and places to avoid on nights out. From my experience in Newcastle, it's only a minority of people who appear to be looking for trouble, or have that aura about them that you know must land them in trouble sometimes. For the most part however, people just like to have fun and be loud then wake up in the morning with a bit of a hangover. Nothing seems to have changed in the last 7-8 years as far as I can see, other than the prices of drinks going UP.

One of my college m8's friends started on me but it was just him being a drunken idiot like he always is.. not someone I see anymore and it's like I say, it tends to be a select few people who appear to be looking for a fight or have the attitude that attracts the wrong kind of people.

I'm certain this is happening already!

There is a place scotwood road/elswick (over that way somewhere) that is no more than a shed in someones front garden.

i dont think the supermarkets have THAT much to do with it though, drinks prices within them have always been relatively cheap - it's because of the pub's putting the prices up needlessly that people are turning to cheaper methods of getting sozzled.

and then the problem get's worse with later licences, which is another problem that contributes on another level to society's viewpoint on going out on the weekend. Generally speaking - people have realised that it's definately the way to go since they can actually stay in till 9 hit only one bar, and then be out alot later than years before when clubs and closed alot earlier.

AND THEN rubbing salt further into the wound is the fact that the smoking ban is putting off people going out earlier (even though they probably say it's nothing to do with it). it's killed off almost completely the working men's clubs in this area - since the clientel took for granted having a smoke with a few drinks and have done for pretty much all their lives - for it to be suddenly taken away by some blokes in suits isnt going to be taken lightly.

it's not fair really, this country is becoming a prepetual comedown that no amounts of valium that will be able to shift.

    :(

i can't see how later licences have made it worse - but i don't have any figures to back this up - but i'd still say the happy hours still encourage people to drink early and we as a society still sort of abide by the '11pm last orders + kebab' routine - thats where most of the trouble is when you're talking about trouble in the town for the police and other emergency services

i'll take that as a 'i have nothing to say' then shall i.

but yeah MOS i can imagine in some cases the opening times have been an issue, i means people go out later - which adds to the effect of people not going out earlier etc.

at least, thats what's happened round here.

I love it when people come out with how much they think England is a shithole. Where else would you like to live Kieren? I can tell you first hand that Australia and New Zealand are much much worse when it comes to this nanny stateness (there is talk that customs will check people's laptops for any illegally downloaded mp3's now and the government is now wanting to make internet filtering compulsory ala China). Some of the more ludicrous idea's here include banning the sale of pets in shops (cruel apparently), banning sun bed shops, and banning joggers from the streets of cities. Brisbane police actually want to make it an offense to talk on your mobile whilst you walk. And it is illegal to jay-walk, so you have to wait 2-4 minutes at crossings to cross the road. I get away with this as I just say to the coppers "Sorry, didn't know, just got off the plane". There are random roadside drug tests here, and just about any substance is automatically illegal (first country in the world to ban Salvia).

    Seriously, England isn't that bad.

i know what your getting at - however i'm just saying that its starting to get that way (in terms of nannyness etc).

i wouldent want to live in australia, however for the weather alone a holiday would be nice :)

i'd rather live in spain/italy/america any of the 3, as much as i hate americans everytime i went i thought it was great - and the way of life as well, years ago we were thinking of emmigrating there because we have family over the pond, but it just wasnt viable because of the job's my parents hold over here :(

shame - because it was florida too

the point is, it used to be better and it's getting worse. we are getting less free every day. just because other places are worse doesn't make me feel better.
I like the greek attitude which is to have all the same laws on the statute book, and then just ignore them.....

i just think its a bit sad to see the country going down the pan so rapidly and theres nothing we can do about it!

i'm off to join a commune in darkest peru to eat marmalade and not worry about such trivial things as the prices of alcohol.

I dunno how the hell they could find the resources to scan all laptops for ILLEGAL mp3's.. what if they're all legal? Sounds like scaremongering to me.

As for the others.. banning pets in shops doesn't sound ludicrous really.. it is cruel to an extent, and a lot of people buy them spontaneously and ignore them after a couple of days. Sun beds - not exactly great for the skin.. Joggers -wtf? lets all be fat! Walking and talking? lols. Salvia.. defo.. that stuff is giving off the wrong ideas about legal drugs and how controlled substances are way stronger.

I guess the UK and Australia could compete for stupidity.. but there is sense in some things.

I believe Italy has really bad economic problems. My lasses family is from there (south Italy I may add, which is different from north Italy), and they all emigrated to Australia and Venezuela as there was no work. Gonna go there next year and meet some of her extended family. Bet its fucking nice there though, but probably just for a holiday as there is no work and hasn't been for years. Greece has the worst deaths on the road in Europe, studied it in spatial geography (lecturer was Greek). And I read the other week that the police in Athens are strip searching asylum seekers on the street for no reason, which is shit. But it does sound nice, my Dad loves it there. My uncle and cousins live in Rochester, New York, and what a violent shithole that sounds. What I'm getting at is every country has its own problems. I'd probably pick Malaysia (Penang) to live i n. Its the perfect mix of east and west, although, again the government interferes a lot there (and are extremely racist towards Malaysian Chinese and especially Malaysian Indian).
